numerous suggestions were given as to our social
events in the near future.
Report of the Athletic Committee received and
accepted.
Mr. Osterhout reported for the Committee on
Memorials. Motion made, seconded and carried that
the report be accepted as read.
Suggestions were made of a larger committee
and a memorial fund; committee to be increased to
about eight members.
Motion ·made, seconded and carried that the ta
chairman of the present Memorial Committee bring
before the next meeting of the Post nominations for
an enlarged committee to work on the larger memor-ial
plan .
Mr. Robert D. Campbell was unanimously elected
Sergeant-at-Arms of the Post.
Motion made, seconded and carried that Mr. Leo
Schloss be elected Employment Offker of the Post. ' .
Motion made, seconded and carried that the
Building Committee be authorized to bring plans
for the renting or leasing of quarters for club
rooms.

$403 . 42. Motion made , seconded and carried that the
same be accepted as read.
Hr. Harold E. Brown reported for the Women ' s
Auxiliary , and presented petit ion duly sibJ1ed by
fifteen women duly qualified for membership in the
Women ' s Auxiliary .
Motion made , seconded and carri ed that we approve
this petition , and that we direct the officers
of the Post to properl y endorse and forward it in
the regular way .
In the absence of Mr. Lee , Mr . Campbell reported
for the Entertainment Committee that Hr . Lee, as
chairman, had engaged the Freeport Club for a dance
on· Friday evening , February 11th, 1921, without con-sulting
the committee. ·
Motion made, seconded and carried that the report
which has been tendered by the Entertainment
Committee be not received at this t i me , and that the
matter be ref erred back to the committee for the
purpose of holding a meeting of the Entertainment
Committee , when the matter can be passed upon .
Mr. Leo Schloss reported for the de l egates to
the County Committee meeting of January 13th, 1921.
Motion made , seconded and carried that Hr . Cecil
Johnson be added to the Press and Publicity Committee .
Mr. Leo Schloss reported for the Disabili ty Committee
. Mr . Leroy ~ells also spoke on conditions in
Foxhills Hospital .
Motion made , seconded and carried that we establish
a disability fund for the benefit of disabled
men, now out of t he service , the method of raising
funds to be taken up hereafter . ·

of ten per cent of the net profits of all our affairs
run by the ·Entertainment Committee, or any
other affairs in which we make any money, go into
the disability fund; provided, however, that the
entire net profits of the next dance go into the •
disability fund.
Hr. Harry Bowers, Jr. tendered his resignation
as captain of the bowling team; reason, lack .of
cooperation. Motion made, seconde·d and carried
that we accept this resignation.
Committee on Memorials reported progress.
Mr. Campbell reported for the Burial Squad.
Report showed body of John J. Thurston returned
from overseas and buried in Greenfield Cemetery on
Monday, January lOth, 1921.
Motion made, seconded and carried that the
members assembled here express their conf ic'l.ence
in our Commander and the Commander' of the Guard
in this matter.
Motion made, seconded and carried that we elect
a sergeant of the guard, to assist Mr. Campbell. ..a
Mr. Cruikshank volunteered, and on motion duly W
made, seconded and carried, was elected sergeant of
the guard.
The Adjutant presented a letter of appreciation
from Mrs. Smith F. Pearsall, for flowers sent
by the Post at the funeral of Mr. Smith F. Pearsall.
·Mr. Guest reported certain black r~bbons given
out by State Headquarters for Legion funerals.
Motion made, seconded and carried, authoriiing the
·Adjutant to purchase four dozen of these mdges
for this Post.

accepted.
Motion made, seconded and carried. that the
chair appoint an Auditing Committee of three, to
audit the books of the treasurer and adjutant and

Mr. Guest suggested the use of the old home defense
whistle for the purpose of assembling the members of
this Post on short notice.
Motion made, seconded and carried that a committee
of three be elected to arrange for getting the use of
the whistle to call out the American Legion whenever
it is necessary to be done, and make the necessary
rules and regulations,to secure the consent of the
village authorities, and such other measures as may
be necessary. The. following committee was elected:-

Mr . Osterhout rendered a report for the Committee
on Necorials. Showed plans for a memorial, to be
erected in front of the First National Bank , Freeport,
which memorial would cost about $5,000. r~r .
Osterhout stated that the cisterns \•rould not inter-6
fere in any way V''ith the monument itself , as the
monument would corne way out front and the cistern
is· further back . Sugpested that the bank would
grant an easement or right to use 'this property in
perpetuity , the bank retaining the legal title and
providing for its upkeep. Hr . Osterhout also suggested
incorporating .
Mr . Beck suggested deeding the property to . the
Town of Hempstead, an(l thus v-e ?'ould be free from
taxes , reserving an easement to the bank for cesspool
purposes , and that the matter of incorporation
be cleferred. '

submitted to various architects for additional
designs . The committee also presented a coomun-ica
tion from Cone;ressman Hicks, offering to obtain.
a 1,000 pound cannon which has seen service in
St. L~lhlel. To obtain this it will be necE'ssary
to present a resolution of the Grand Army or
Village Board, etc . ; resolution of the Legion will
not be sufficient.

REGULAR MEETING , held at Odd Fellows Hall, Free-port,
N, Y,, on May 27th, 1921. e 1
The meeting was called to order at 8~50 P. M. by
Second Vice-Commander Leo Schloss. Mr. Young acted
as Adju11ant.
The reading of minutes of the previous meeting
was dispensed with.
Mr. Lee reported fQr t,he Entertainment Committee
that, although moving picture show was not well
attended, it would show a profit.
Mr. Raymore reported balance on hand in treasury
as $294.59. .
Mr. Cruickshank reported fQr the Memorial Committee,
in the absence of Mr. Osterhout, that the
cannon had arrived and would be set up Saturday
afternoon at the corner of Ocean and Brooklyn Avenues
and called for volunteers to assist him. He
advised that, aithough the cannot was received in ..
the original crates, it had been snipped from ..
France and the question of assembly would be a simple
one. He reported that Mr. Wagner, the architect,
was working on final drawings for the memorial, and

Mr. Young reported for the Legion Bulletin that
copie$ were al~ in the mail, having been held up
for the issuance of general orders for Memorial Day.
He stated that the success of the Bulletin depended
upon how it was received by the members and called
for suggestions and contributions from every one.
Mr. Downs advised that the body of his son,
William F. Downs, had arrived that morning unexpectedly
and that the services would be held Sunday, May

the small number present and the short time in which
to notify members, that a representative of the Post

and notify them and request Mr. Johnson to include
a notice in Saturday's Review, and further
that Mr. Cruickshank be instructed to have the
American Legion . whistle sounded at on. ce.
General Orders for Memorial Day were read by ViceCommander
Schloss and discussion held on question of
uniforms.
Motion made, seconded and passed that the Woman's
Auxiliary be asked to furnish the Legion with 150
arm bands for general use along lines outlined by
the Executive Committee.
Mr. Howard Mahnken reported that the Ritual Committee
was still at work on a ritual ·and hoped to
report something definite at the next meeting.
Motion made, seconded and carried that a committee
be appointed by the commander to handle the details
of the State Bonus.
Motion made, seconded and carried that the Post
assemble at Truck House on Church Street at 1.00
P. M. , Sunday, May 29th, for the services of William
F. Downs, and that the Legion provide pall bearers
and color guard in uniform, and that the firing
squad go direct to the cemetery.

Upon the arrival of Mr. Campbell, a rising vote
of congratulation was extended to him on the new 4t
arrival in his family, and after a few remarks, Mr. '
Campbell took over the chair from Mr. Schloss.
A shoet address was made by Capt. H. Mathias,
formerly of the Canadian Army, and now in the diplomatic
service between the United States and Canada.
He advised of his intention to reside in Freeport
and expressed his regret at not being eligible to
join the Legion and offered his services to the
Post. He was extended an invitation to attend the
Post meetings whenever possible.

Legion, showing list of draft deserters from this

Motion made, seconded and carried that it be referred
to the Executive Committee with power.
Treasur•er 's report showed balance on hand of
$207.71.

The Entertainment Committee reported progress.
Motion made, seconded and carried that the Bonus
Committee be given full power to go ahead, so as to
take care of every ex-service man in this vicinity .
Mr. Leo Schloss reported the isolated location
of the grave of John J. Thurston in Greenfield Cemetery,
with no headstone.
Mr. Brown spoke on saving the stones of Grand Army
Veterans, buried in the Freeport ceoetery, and the
preservation of these stones in Freeport.
Mr. Osterhout urged personal solicitation in the
collection of dues.
The following resolution was unanimously adopted:RESOLVED
that we extend the sympathy of the
members of this Post to the family of National Commander
Gailbraithe upon the death of the National
Commander, and that the Adjutant of the Post be instructed
to send a copy of this resolution to the
appropriate authority so that it will be called to
the attention of the family.
Mr. Cruickshank reported on the cannon. Mr. Bond,
of the water works, has agreed to take care of the
surplus parts, which we did not use, such as wheels,
etc.
Discussion as to bill of $155.00 of Merle Mont
Post, for transporting cannon from Metuchen, N. J.
to Fr~ort. It was decided that this bill was all
right .
Motion made, seconded and carried that bill of
$50.00 be paid, for wreaths on Memorial Day.
Motion made, seconded and carried that Mr.Goller,
together with all the men he can get with him on
the committee, be directed to plan a membership
drive for not later than July let, with the idea of
collecting dues from delinquent members.
Motion made, seconded and carried that the Adjutant
be directed to write a letter of thanks to the
Hempstead Post for distributing flowers on the graves
of ex-service men from Freeport on Memorial Day. j

of Private Frank H. Casper , who was buried 4t
i n Calvary Cemetery on. June , 1921 . The firing
squad was furnished by a post in Long Island City ,
which contained many friends of Casper. On account
of the funeral coming on a week day , the Long
Island City Post called on Fort Totten for the
firing squad . The cost of transporting the troops
was $15 .00, which they requested us to pay .
Lengthy discussion as to the payment of this bill .
Motion was made and seconded that the bill be
paid .
Motion made , seconded and carried that the previous
motion' be amended to the effect tha t the matter be
placed in the hands of our Post Commander for settlement
, with full power .

Motion was made, seconded and carried that the Adjutant
draw up a suitable resolution, to be forwarded
to our Congressman and Senators, urging the passage
of these bills.
Capt. :Mathias addressed the meeting, and in.troduced
Col. H. c. Wilson, a member of the Fort Schuyler
Post, Bronx, now an as'sociate member of this
Post. Mr. Wilson made a few remarks.
Mr. Leo Schloss reported for the Bonus Committee.
Mr. Brown reported for the Entertainment Co~mittee,
as to a carnival proposition presented by a Mr. Block.
Mr. Campbell mentioned the firemen's carnival to be
held in the near future.
Motion was made, seconded and carried that it be
referred to the Entertainment Committee, to look into
the matter and report back to the Post.
The Adjutant presented a communication from the .
Roosevelt Hose Company, No. 1, inviting the Post to
participate in .parade at Roosevelt on July 4th.
Motion was made, seconded and carried, that we
accept the invitation, and that Mr. Beck and all other
members of the Post from Roosevelt be constituted the
committee to work this up.
Mr. Brown reported as to grave stones in Freeport
Cemetery. Mr. Fulton has agreed to watch for monuments
or all men who have been in the military service
and will keep us posted as to the movements of all
those monuments. The bodies of the Mott boys, who
were killed in .the Civil War, are not buried here;
their bodies are buried on southern battlefields;
only the grave stone is here. Suggested getting in
touch with Mrs. Hague , the only living relative of 41 the Mott boys.

be appointed a committee of one to take care of this
matter.
