The Freeport Recreation Center will swimming, skating, and the use of the

Last Call for
Little League
Registration
Youngsters interested in signing up for
Freeport's Little League teams may register at
the Freeport Recreation Center on Saturday,
February 7th and Sunday, February 8th from
10 a.m. to 2p.m.
Children who have never registered for
Freeport's Little League must come to the
Recreation Center and bring their birth
certificates or passports with them for
identification. If the child was previously a
member of a Little League team, you may reg-ister
online at www.freeportlittleleague.com.
The organization is asking friends, family,
neighbors and anyone with an hour or two to
spare to volunteer-as managers, coaches, and

There are many good reasons to live
in Freeport, as most residents know, but
among the very special advantages is the
Village's Recreation Center. Since coming
into office in 1997, the Glacken Adminis-tration
has been rebuilding the cen-ter
from the ground up. Our efforts :
included adding special amenities
to the senior wing, as well as pro-viding
new air conditioning for the
entire center, upgrading the exercise
room, improving the gym and re-pairing
and renovating the indoor
pool as well as the three outdoor
pools, including the Olympic-size
pool. Our latest renovation has

Dozens of civic groups and other
organizations use the center for their
regular meetings. Every year, Pack 18 of
the Cub Scouts celebrates its annual
awards dinner in the spacious upstairs
lounge. The Freeport Police Ath-letic
L,eague distributes trophies
to the winning basketball,
lacrosse, soccer and flag football
teams there as well. On any given
weekend, there is a show or
exhibit, sponsored by a major
organization, taking place in the
Recreation Center's gymnasium.

The 19th Annual Winter Model
Train Show and Exhibition, sponsored
by the Great South Bay Model
Railroad Club drew thousands of fans
to the Freeport Recreation Center to
enjoy the various model trains on
display on January 11th.
Many of the regulars who brought
their children to the show over the
years are now bringing their grand-children
to enjoy the displays of
various sized model trains and browse
the vast array of items that accompany
the layouts. Over the course of the
day's program, more than 4,000 peo-ple
attended the event.
The trains ranged from the small-est,
Z scale, to the slightly larger
N scale, HO scale, O scale, to the
largest, G scale, represented by the
LGB layout displayed by the Long
Island Garden Railway Society, Inc.
There were dozens of door prizes given out
all during the show, and several major raffle
prizes donated by the Nassau Hobby Shop

Our Holy Redeemer's Parish Outreach Needs Help
The current economic downturn has
taken its toll on local food pantries, includ-ing
the Parish Outreach center at Our Holy
Redeemer Church in Freeport. The center
is in desperate need of food, clothing, and
most of all, the volunteers necessary to
distribute these items to the growing num-ber
of needy families.
Sister Dorothy Lynch, and the other
volunteers at the Parish Outreach center at
87 Pine Street, located between Guy Lom-bardo
Avenue and Ocean Avenue, have
asked for canned goods, non-perishable
food, and pre-packaged items that people
who are homeless and without a place to
cook can eat. The center needs blankets,
coats, other articles of clothing, and
toiletries such as soap and toothpaste.
Sister Dorothy is asking the community
to find the time to volunteer at the center in
order to keep it open and available to help
individuals and families, some with young
children, who are in dire circumstances.
There is a particular need for people with
medical training or nursing experience.

monthly payments debited directly from
their checking accounts. The Village is of-fering
its utilities customers a new service,
the Direct Debit Payment Program.
The program is easy to use and free of
charge. An application will arrive in the
mail with your next electric and/or water
bill. To sign up for direct debit, simply
complete the application, attach a voided
