Crackdown On Bike Violators
"Bike riders had better beware the man in blue,"
Freeport Felice Chief Anthony Elar stated in an-nouncing
that his force has set in motion a
directive of the Village Board of Trustees to
strictly enforce the State and Village laws gov-erning
the riding of bicycles. Sixty-seven
summonses or warnings were issued to violators in
one week alone. "For the protection of our res-idents,
young and old, bikers, motorists and
pedistrians, we must insure that when an individ-ual
gets on a bike, they understand that .there
are rules that must be obeyed," the Chief said.
Individuals over the age of 16 can be given a
summons answerable in Village Court just like
any motorist. Youngsters, at the discretion of
the officer, will be given a verbal warning but
most serious offenders will be issued a written
warning with a letter sent hone to their parents.
A record will be kept on the child and repeated
offenses may result in confiscation of the bike,
or, court action.
Chief Elar points out that the most common viola-tions
are more than one on a bike; improper equip-ment
— no bell, light, horn, reflectors, or
bad tires; and moving violations such as riding
against traffic, in the middle of the road or en
the sidewalk and failure to obey traffic signals.
In order to assist residents in complying with
the Village law requiring that each bike be
registered, additional hours have been set aside
for such registrations. Starting this month,
personnel will be on.hand the first Saturday of
the month from 10:00am to 2:00pra at Police Head-quarters,
'tO North Ocean Avenue. Bikes will also
continue to be registered each Wednesday from
2:00pm to >t:QQpm. Cost is 1% on a one time basis.
The 20-year-eld registration program has proved
a deterrent against theft.
