"The Boating and Pithing Capital of th« Eart"
JULY, 1970
DEAR FREEPORTER:
You have no doubt noticed that there is much in
the newspapers and on TV lately about the battle to say*
our environment. ..One of .the biggest problems ini^thiis i ii
very real struggle concerns the collection and disposal
of garbage and trash. ~,
: Despite all the new awareness, some people don't
realize how important is their own role in keeping their
own community from being overwhelmed by the garbage prob-lem.
• , •
It takes:very little effort, from each individual,
but when many individuals get careless and thoughtless
the resulting sanitation problems can be staggering...
and so can the cost. The cost to you, the people of
Freeport, is approaching $1,OOO,OOO a;year, or about 2O#
of the total cost of all Village services. You pay
through the nose for each violation<of sanitation rules,
in higher taxes, higher mortgage payments, or higher
rent. You also pay the price of a less attractive, less
desirable community, when and if the sanitation services
are overburdened.
What can you do, as an individual? Something
very important.; You can help reduce the problems by
strictly following the regulations of the Freeport Sani-tation
Department, setting the example in your neighbor-hood,
urging your friends and neighbors to do likewise.
Be aware of the time schedules and procedures.
Use the proper containers* Space out your trash 'removal'
to avoid heavy loads ?in one day. Keep trash neatly bun-dled
and tied.

of Freeport.
