Somehow wo don't blame the management of the Long Island . Railroad Company for feeling pride in what has been accoinpiiuhed by (bo railroad during its 87 years of history.
It certainly hus boeii "liard sled¬ ding" much of the time for tho various companies und subsidiaries I inanity ¦whioh have made up the system. { There have been darlt years and trials and misfortunes and difficulties galore.

By means of three new siilmuirino i telephone cables recently put into ser¬ vice between Key West, Kla., and the Cuban capital, and affordiuK a direet tolfephono connection with the .N'ew York Tvlephtmc Company's wires In New York City, it is now possibh? for the tired business man of Henipstead to cull up the i.sland rejiublic and in- (luii'e, for iristunee, about tlio.se tliiiiKS reconstructionj| jvliieli have Imen Vol.steuiled out of iln- l'nited Slates, or to conduct otliei- business of greater or less importance
The new Ifavana tallies contain the loiiKCHt submarine telephone lines in the worlsl. One of the diflliullies was traveisinj; a subniarine mountain raiiKc, which has an altitude eciuivalent to the Al- IcKhany mountains. The cable lino, however, crosses thesu niouiitaiiis much the same as a land line would cross a terra flrma range, except, of course, there arc no jioles.
The depth of the ocean is oiu' mile at the farthest downward point, just outside of Havana harb<ir. l''rom Ivcy \Vcsl, a city built on the <.'oral reefs, the telephone line had previousl.v Ix-en carried to the mainland on the viaduct of the famed Florida Kast Coitet Kailwaj'.
Kacli cable contains a siifule copper i-onduclor, which ia protected and iii- sulate«l hy coverings of gutia jiercha, a continuous copper tape, and jute wrap- piiiKs and steel armor wli-es on the outside. Tiic cahlo itself is hardly larger than a man's wrist, while the total welKht of tho three cable lines is about 3,.';o0,(i00 iwunds.
