Mineola, March 32.—WUUam H^ Grace, as Buardlan ad litem for Winiom H. Orace, Jr., has brouKht an action in
or straw and' that It is «B do»reos F under tho brooder and that your brood- ¦ er win maintain ihnt temperature day nnd night. Put your chicks under at niKht and help thom under. If It is dark When you put thom under th^y will stay If not dark make some ar¬ rangement to keep thom under so that thoy know where tho heat Is. Noxt morning havo a tray of line grit. (The bright oatmeal attmcts them) and n fountain of lubbored sour milk. Not mouldy. The milk will not flow thru the fountain, but it should be so fixed that thoy cannot walk In It. Fix the hoover so that chicks cannot got away from heat, just room enough to get tho milk and feed. Tho flrst day or two tho chicks mu.st not bo allow<>d to stand around idle. Watch thom and shove thom under tho hoover If you find nny standing huddling outside. Two or throe ilays of diligent attention will teach them where tho heat is and you will liavo no moro trouble.
Sncond day ndd wntor and n. very little chick feed.
Thre«> Days to HIx Days Heat undor hoover about 93 degrees P. Mix up: 4 lbs. of Oatmeal (flaked). 4 Ibs. of dry well ground bread or
cracker or crumbs. 2 lbs. of best boof scrap, slfto«l. % lb. of bono meal. % lb. of onion or other shredded Kro<n food such as flno crisp cab¬ bage leaves ground up with the wholo mixture. - .
The above to be moistened with sour milk and feed .'ibout flvo times a day. Fhio grit and charcoal scattered over tho food. It is best to fei-d In a shallow tray or trays. Feed just enough to be eaten up In a few minutes. Not too wet. Vary the above with chick grain about flvo times a duy. Do not over feed. Most chicks die of too much feed. Keep sour milk beforo them all the time.
By this time you should not havo los' any. except the weak ones not fit to live, but from now on it is up to you. They will sUind a lot of abuse but jv* In Incubation there ts a factor of safety. Six Days to Two Wefeks Heat now can bo lowered_lo 88 de¬ grees to 90 degrees F. but you must havo heat all tho time once they learn to huddle it soeras to become a passion nnd they do so through tho hottest weather. The llvo ones become ,^eak and many die each night. Keep sour milk, cleiin fresh water and dry mash before them all the time. The mash Is: 3 lbs. corn moal. 3 lbs. wheat mlddllngR. 3 lbs. wheat bran. 3 lbs. boat beef scrap. 1 lb. flno bono meal. Olrnell experiment station drops the broad mixture above at flvo days but they relish It so much thnt I continue It na long as I can, mixing with It some dry mash. Whether you feed the bread mixture or not they should havo the mash moistened with sour milk at least three times a day. Chick feed should be fed in tho litter three times a day., Get them good nnd hungry once a day and do not feed If they do not appear to want it. With the dry mash In front of them thoy will not .starve. They should eat ns much ma.sh as grain. Two Weeks to Four Weeks Fresh clean water, dry ma.sh, fine grit, oyster shells and charcoal always beforo them. Chick feed in litter twice a day. Moist ma.sh twice a day. They stll Ineed heat. If too hot they will get away from it themselves. 1 would give them sour milk as long as 1 could afford it. They sell It by tho barrel for poultry feeding.
Four to .Six Weeks Same as above, but change chick feed to 3 pounds of wheat, 2 pounds of cracked corn, 1 pound of hulled or pine head oats.
Six Weeks to Maturity Bamo as above, but only ono moist mash a day. continued next week.)
Cut out and save the above formulae you will need them.
(Car^ of Chicks nnd pulleta will be continued noxt woek.
