Freeport, .May 11.—A good many of the Elks who cam<> into the lodge wbbe the Mystic .Myst of the B. tt. It. U. were (In power, reveled in the thought that friends of theirs whom they n|>ight bring In .-IB members In the days to eome would hnve to undergo the s.ime treat ment with |)erhaps .¦» few suggepilon'^ added on.'
Those poor Innocents rtkl not know that tfie Terrible Torture Chamber and t'mph High Ooxooks was but a pass¬ ing thine: and that when the fiscal year closed so too would end the Mystic Myst.
AU ot the dreams of escorting some friend through tbe Interesting maces of the Deep Forest and gathering the FniliN of T>cep Knowledge that sprung up or dropped down beside the P.ith- way have faded, and all that remains is a silent room wherein the pompous rotx's of the Lord High Chiefs and the Pust Orand Pushes hang In silent splen. dor.
•So too remains silent the little at>art- ment of John Harleycorn tb;it used to I»arade the streets behind^ the Elks R:ind. And there comes .another cause for gloom, the band.
If may,be that the hand wtll ce.Tso to function as such In the near future ow¬ ing to the fact that they cannot get same horns tlwit are neee.'i.«ary to the n'l ir.Tre and fanfare of the muslciin^.
It Is hoped that the hand will not ci-as" to spread musical joy at all of ih-:' Elks outings heeause the Lodge's out¬ door gatherings h.ave been made joyous by th<* sound of martial music.
But as for the Mystic Myst. they may come to life In some other form but the' olden drxys of glittering regalia ani pomp liave been relegated to the fast
grt'Wing dusty archives of tbe past
A vagrant brt^exe may blow in at an op«>n wlndow^ and stir the spears and broadswords of the silent Ivnst and the 'garments of the Thrice Exalted Torture Expert may rustle as lhey tell to on«' another of the stories nbout the days when the Fahrenheit Degref" of tbe Order was the one that made every man a good Elk and one who never for¬ got thp order. *
Names are passed In this silent room hut names mean nothing. It is simply the fact that a eondltion hats bad Us day and must now rest In oblivion until .«ucb time as It may seem fit to reju venate the glories of ancient history.
What manner or form it will take. Is not known but tf It so happens that the P. R. B. B. buazes round ngoln the familiar halls.and pas.sages, the old club will on^'c more set aside an evening once ill a while when th*' iitTalrs of state and the business worries of the day can find relaxation In harmless klddlshness. Anything to amuse the members since the days of artificial good feelings and happiness have gone astray.
"All work and no pUty, doesn't length en life a day" as the nld saying goes. Orant's Tomb was never designed as a pl.-K-e to go and tell the latest vaude- ^ ille Jol<es or engage" in horse play, but those who go there In all reverence .-uid sincerity are liable to he found on the next corner engaging Iti a romp, there- l.y balancing the distribution of human emotions, whate^'er that is.
.Something will happen to take thv l)lac.> of the B. B. ami the band if both of them go as the present Big Chief did not bring the cemetery witli him when he came to Freeport, but in the interim, while he is thinking up something, OKI .\I«n (Sloom stalks abroad unmoleiitrd.

The Ure .spread so f|ulckly thiit flro. men were convinced tUat it was of in¬ cendiary origin. The firemen were calle<l to extinguish four other small rtri»s In various parts of the city durng the evening, two of which were cert.Un- ly set. Tvrn su.spects are being held by<i the police.
