(CantluMi fram p*(« 1)
Tn addition to thia Chairman Hiram R. Smith, oC the |k>ard of fluperrlsora and hia colleague, Supervisor O. Wll- Irnr I>oughty have Iwd the utmost con- f^lenca In Mr. Hubbell and thoaa aaao- t^ated with him. They feel, aa doea ha. (hat Nasaau County, cannot afford to neglect Ita Blck or let the well fall by dlaeaac.
Th* new buikling, with central heat¬ ing plant, and all the changes and im¬ provementa Ihat will Im made, except the Wella that muat bo driven, will c>o«t $231,000 or a ronsldrrable aUm under wl^it waa thought would b*' re¬ quired. The contract haa been let to tha Nortboaatern Construction Com¬ pany, of Manhattan. Work will go forward within a few days.
The new buildings will allow for a total patient populartion of 94 beds, ex- oluslve of six Isolalkm beda which must ever be kept for the emergencies tiiat always arise In an lnstltutk>n of this kind.
Thia means that 40 more patients can be taken In tbe hospital. It will provide for 24 single roonui while the rest of the patient population will be in ttu> warda.
Dr. Davis, since he opened the county tuberculosis hospital at Plaln¬ vlew. has admitted 142 patients. Many ot these have been discharged appar¬ ently cured, symptom f^ee, and able to return to work. Others have greatly improved. There had been an average gain of 13.6 lbs. per patient In weight. The new buildings were designed and Will be built under the supervision of Architect Stewart Wagner, of Manhat¬ tan.
Plans call for an infirmary building, encloaed passageway connecting the present administration building with the new and the existing Infirmary buildings, ^ residence for the superin¬ tendent, a shed and root cellar, garage, additions to the present farmhouse'nnd well and pump house, remodeling nnd additions and alterations to the boiler room in the present administration building.
The buildings will be of concrete and brick comitructlon throughout, only the connecting passageway.^ be¬ ing of wood. The plans call for hollow tile pai<titions and linoleum covered floors. They also call for iK>rches for each sln|(le room so that patients may live out of doors, have their beds rolled out and generally spend 24 hours a day In the fresh air, with all possible sunshine. These, with good food and rest constitute the sole treatment for the tubercular patient. There will be aolariums where sunshine may be en- Joyed for those patients who can stand it whenever It is possible.
The buildings will be erecf^l^ In (i "V" shape plan so that there will l>e light and air from all sides and ho that the sun will roaqh aa many parts of it at one time aa poaaible.
There are two existing buildings, one an administration building in which Dr. and Mrs. Davis Uve. This serves alao aa. office and home for the nurses. The other two story ward building of frame construction. It Is the intention to uae all of this present plant in the new acheme.
The new atructure will be electrically lighted, heated and well ventilated with approved plumbing and drainage, a flre alarm ayatem and signal system for nuraes.
The basement will have an assembly room and store rooms.
First floor plans show a recreation room, lobby, dining rooms, laboratory, dental offices, diet kitchen, baths, six bed rooma in each wing, each with an individual porch and two additional bedrooms off the laboratory end of tho building and two wards.
The second floor of each wing la a rapetltion of the flrat floor for the moat part, except that on this floor and at the tar end of or\e wing will bo Isolation rooms.
The third floor has a huge solarium, A waiting room and most Important of alt in tuberouloslB work, a large and #all equipped X-Ray department.
Not a small part of the hoapital plant and farm ia the farm Itaelf, for on that part of the plant falla a large share ef the task of providing good food for the inmates.
Tha farmer Is able to raise all the farm atuff the place can uae and so well is the farm conducted that not a little of the produce ia sold and the proceeda turned into the hoapital funda. Dr. Davia haa recently eatabllahed a chicken farm in connection with the cenaral farm, with 3,000 chickeua there ^ncw that will keep the inmatea in freah awa and fumiah chicken for meala from time to time.
Dr. Davia, a graduate phratclan, took bin apecial training for tuberculoala work st Rjtybrook, tba New Tork State Saratarlum between Saranac Lake vil¬ lage and Lake Placid village. He paaa- ad a civil aervice examination to take kta preaent poaltion, although baving dome from the rigid routii^e of Ray- lirook wh^ra Dr. Gaivin and Dr. Bray had aet auch a hish atandard it waa hardly neceaaary to have additional iaradeotialB.
