FOR SAFETY IN BATHIMQ
Always during the suniiner season the newspapers record deaths of the venturesome who disregard the usual ruTes of safety at the bathing beach¬ es. Often it is, shown that the life might^have been saved by exercising more care.
At the bathing resorts where safe¬ guards are provided anfl lifeguards are posted, It Is seldom that a drown¬ ing occurs. The very presence of the guards ami the fact that safe arean are roped off, makes the bather cau¬ tious and careful.
A large propqrtion of the bathing beach drownings occur because need¬ less risks are taken by bathers.
There are so many places that arc safe for the puhllc and there- is sn much benefit from thr kct. batli that every means by people in normal health taking (his enjoyable form of recreation. The one warning ia lo keep within the bounds uf safely aud mako uso of all the safeguards thai are provided.

One of the noteworthy features (it this year's graduations froin the liigh pchools Is the high percentage of girls who are to tnke college courses. Girls of today arc preparing tt bo fn truth leading women of tomorrow.
It seema remartoble that aome laws Are made to apply to one person »nd not to another, yet auch seem* to be the caae. Reference ia made to the refusal of ttM Hempatead Village Board to permit Mra. Freeth to erect a wooden addition to her building, located within the flre llmita, where- aa another party but a ahort time ago Itut up a new wooden building, alao within Ihe lire limits, without the slightest molestation, and. In viola¬ tion not only of the village ordinance, but, according to the VINage Clerk, of the permit Issued by him. ^
No Issue can be taken with the Village Board for fefuslng to sanc¬ tion the violation of the village ordi¬ nances In the case before it Tuesday night, but It seems high time for a real show-down for the village to And out whether or.not its ordinanc¬ es are worth the paper on which they are written, and if they are, whether they can be deliberately vio¬ lated with impunity.
If the ordinance is legal and can be enforced and It has been violated, there is no other way left open for the Board, it would seem, than to begin the, proper legal action against the offer/der. If the ordinance is ¦worthless as it stands, It certainly should be made right, if it Is a nec- osHiiry ordinance. If it is not need- r><l it should be repealed. But the spectacle of tho constituted authority being openly defied, and making fish

AIL WANT GOOD ROADS
Among all the duties of the Board ""or Buporvisors of Nassau County per- Tnilis none is more vital in its good effect throughout the county than that of keeping the highways in suit¬ able state of repair."
Just now tliore is urgent need for much to be done in many sections of tho county. Tho subject has had consideration during this week and it Is anticipated that a large s^m will be made available to bring the high- Mrays designated by the County Bn- gliieer into tho proper stat^pf repair.
It Is no longer necessary to argue as to tho wisdom of providing gopd roads in Nassau. "4low.inuch can wo get?" seems to be the leading lestlon with the taxpayers.

"Dehurau" is not the sort of play that oould he given hy local Btock comi>aiiles with a viHiting •'^tar for tho principal role: a plan which George Arllss sug- KOfits for keeping thu! dramatic perform antes before tho provincial public ile- spite the cxhorl)itant railroad rales. The heavy production, ko rich in detail, and .so dependent uiion detail for its ef- fectivonosH could not he approximated hy thu most elaborately eiiuippcd stock theatre.
In fact, many tino play.s of tho laxt twonty years oould not be offered the puhllc outside New York t>y Mr. Arllss' device. What would heiome of "Peter Pan," of "Cyrano de Bergorac," of "The Blue I^iid," of ".Vhiaham Lincoln" with¬ out tho appropriate KottlnKM? Mr. Arlisti plans that the actor is to "go alone— without scenery, without a cast of play- er«, without properties."
Then too, many i>layH tliat havo not heen so good, hut which have heon a.s entertaining — "Ueartbreak House," "Peter (Jrimm." "Tho Poor l.lltio Rich Cilrl"—would lose much of their li«auty without the arlisti(\aiKl interpretative settingS'Tn which wo have seen them.
Tho one big virtue of Mr. Arlina' Kchome, imiiie from that of tpwurting tho niHj'ies anil the railroads, is that of making it more certain that "Shakes¬ peare would not be nearly ho likely to Klioll 'ruin.'" Indeed, Shakesijesro. with Ihe oonvontloiializi'd biisinettH work¬ ed out ftM' each of his plays, would-be the grand fallback of tho operatorH un¬ der tho plan of Mr. ,\rliss. Kor that matter, ll>scn can tie prixiuocd likewise, or with the difference that no visiting star would lie necessary. In fact, the one resemblanort between Ibsen and the great dramatists Is that he can be pro¬ duced on a blank stage. Not that It has been widely tried: hut ho would mi^an jUHt aa much, as art, produced that way a« in any other manner.
