TH£ VEW TBOLLET SCHEDULE The proiniBo of the New York and Jjoag Island Traction Company uf the ov.rly adoption of a flfteen ^ninute Bervice between 5:30 a. ni. and 9 p. m., Is much better than tbe residents of these villages and communities had even dared to hope for. Tbo peo¬ ple had been led to believe thut it would come aomo time, but tbe early announcement of Vice President Wood of the probability of the new switches being put iu and the added service started about the flrst of J.uly is "so sudden" it ulmost takes one's breath away.
However, unexpected as it is, it is none tho less welcome, and in all probability if will be profltable to the company, even though It Increas¬ es the cost of operation to some ex- -tent. Furthermore, j^t removes the last vestige of an excuse for the bus lines paralleling tho trolley lines and gives the trolley company good grounds upon which to fight the granting a certificate lo bus lines by the Public Service CommiBsiou.

ENCOURAGE THE YOUNG
How many of you have children in school?
How many of you can tell off hand what grades your children aro iu?
How many of you know the books your children are studying, the size of the lessons tho teacher assigns, or the progress the little ones arc mak¬ ing?
How many of you take time occa¬ sionally to run over the Icbsous with your children?
How many of you think to com¬ mend them for tho interest they are taking and for tho advancement they have made?
There was a time when you were young—when you worried your ju¬ venile brain over problems which seemed mountainous then, but ure so simple now.
Commeiulatiun uud encouragement wore sweet to you then.
Ti^oy are just us precious to your children now.

WATCHING <JEHt: BOY
The abolition of the State Milita¬ ry Training Commission und the re¬ peal of the military training law on July 1, does not mean that the boy welfare features ot the work will en¬ tirely disappear. Announcement has been made iu various seciions that muuicipulitics aro planning to con¬ tinue with their own resources along tho same liuoti, and in other places virtually tho same work will be at- toniplcd in other ways.
Tho military training law was pussod and the Oomihission establish¬ ed lu 1016. The records in the of¬ llce u( the Commission show thut the Commission has looked upon Us work us a boy welfare problem rather than a solilier trainiUK mousuve, thus fol¬ lowing the evident intention of the legislature, which limited the amount of tri),luinK to uot moro than throe hours a week for forty-oqe weeks in tbe year for 16, 17 aud 18 your old buys.
Tlju program developed puid pur- ticuiar attention to giving to {.he tnnployed boys oppQrtunities never before accoriled fur physical training und sjjpervlsed recreation. Through the pbynicul training law tbe school boya bave bad ample facilities for phy«ioal traiuiHg,,but it waa tbruugb ttiir (ttJUlary Irainiifg law thut tbe
it was the contention of Oovemor Miller that tbe welfare features of tbe Military Training Commission's program could better be carried out by other agencies which bave become'" in ter ested through the work already done, thus effecting a big saving to tb«.people and also perfect¬ ing the boy.

YOUK COMMUNITY
Each one in thi^jtown should have on intimate acquaintance with the requirements and possibilities of this community.
It is only through such means that we aro enabled to take proper ad¬ vantage of tbc opportunities that present themselves for community betterment.
Such ar) interest on the purl of the populace does not end with commu¬ nity improvement. Thore is a per¬ sonal equation which is of vast im¬ portance.
It deflects our minds from our pri¬ vate business affairs, gives them food for thought and development, affords us a broader perspective of life and its conditions, and strengthens us for llie battles of the years that are before ^s. II is u good thing in ull ways.

ADDITIONAL PROOF
Every community has its quota of citizens who take no more active in- lerotit in politics than to register and vote on election day. While it would be better If more would do their share to build up the local or- g4nizalion8, the fact is there 'are those who for some reason or anoth¬ er content themselves with simply voting and letting tbat be their part in public affairs. From time to time, however, there is Indication that more people are realizing the value of taking some concern in civic mat¬ ters aside from Just going to the polling booths.
The ordinary person figures that there is nothing to be gained by be¬ coming active in politics, but there are those who by experience have learned that there is and who have seen that they can aid in a big work. Under the present system of govern¬ ment parties control, and the party organization is the instrument through which party affairs arc shai>ed. The man or woman who joins the party organization, becom¬ ing eligible by enrollment, can have u voice, und if thut mun or woman has a sound suggestion it is bound to ho considered. But the sugges¬ tion must como from those who are idenlitied with the party urguniza- tion.
Since women liavo been given the vote there has been more interest displayed iu purty organizations, and it inay be said thut the organizations have been Btrengthoned by th^ir as¬ sistance. Nuturully the women have taken a ktjcn Interest In their work and what they have done has added Just so many more who realize that there mut>L be organization behind any big movement. The womau to¬ day is a citizen ot New York State, whereas formerly she was only a res¬ ident. Now that she has cqi^al rigbts she hus spread the gospel of organ¬ ized eflfort so that the value of or¬ ganization is becoming more and more clear, even to men of the typo who never did anything more than go to tbe polls and vote. -^
