Protest Bill That Would Deny
Local Law On Meat Packaging
Free Movie At Public Library
An Academy Award winning
film, The Titan: Story of
Michelangelo, will be shown at
the Bar Harbour Building of the
Massapequa Public Library, 40
Harbor Lane, Massapequa Park,
on Sunday, May 26.
The free movie will begin at
3: 00 p. m. and last 70 minutes.
An art documentary that recreates
the renaissance world
of Michelangelo and unfolds the
artist's varied career, this film
is narrated by Fredric March.
Camera work highlights studies
of David, Moses, the Sistine
Chapel, and the Medici monument,
among others, and captures
the beauty of Italian cities and
countryside.
County Executive Engine H
Nickerson this week lodged a
strong protest in Albany against
a State Senate bill that would bar
Nassau County from enacting its
own local law to protect consumers
against fraudulent practices
in meat packaging.
Nickerson directed the County
Attorney's office to file a memorandum
in opposition to Senate
Bill, No. 5468, introduced by the
Rules Commitee, which provides
that pre- packaged meat may be
sold in a package which is colorless
and transparent on only one
side. The bill, at the same time,
precludes local enactment of effective
standards to protect local
residents, Nickerson said.
He said the bill is not stringent
enough to protect the local consumer
against the rare unscrupulous
dealer who attempts to fool
the buyer by placing fatty or unappetizing
portions of meat on the
bottom of the package where it is
concealed by cardboard or other
materials.
The County executive also directed
the County Attorney's office
to draft a local law, similar
to one enacted in 1968 by New
York City, that requires that all
packaged meats sold at retail
be placed in packages that are
transparent on all sides.
" If this Senate bill is enacted,"
Nickerson said, " it will perpetuate
existing inadequate packaging
practices and prevent local
imposition of more realistic and
effective standards. It falls far
short of protecting the consumer
at a time when it is vital that we
protect the consumers' interests.
I urge that this legislation not
be enacted."
