$ 33 Million Sewage Plant
Up For Approval
County Executive Eugene H.
Nickerson this week announced
he has approved and sent on to
the Board of Supervisors plans
and specifications for the construction
of the Wantagh Water
Pollution Control Plant to serve
the 560,000 residents of Sanitary
Sewer District # 3.
Communities south of Merrick
Road including Merrick, Massa-pequa,
Wantagh, and Seaford, will
be serviced by the scheduled plant
starting in 1971.
The plant, estimated to cost
$ 33 million will be located on a
50- acre site in the new Cedar
Creek Park, Seaford. It will have
an exterior constructed of red
brick and mansard slate with a
circular walkway and fountains,
surrounded on three sides by
recreational facilities.
The plant will have an initial
design capacity of 45 million
gallons per day and produce its
own electricity, utilizing digestor
gases given off in treatment supplemental
by natural gas. The 45
million gallons per day design
capacity will be reached in approximately
15 years. Future
contracts, estimated at $ 15 million,
will be let for construction
of the plant's subsequent phases
which will increase capacity to
120 million gallons per day.
According to Nickerson, at
least 60 per cent of construction
costs will be paid by the state
and federal governments under
the Pure Waters and Clear Water
Restoration Acts, through construction
aid grants.
If approved by the Board of
Supervisors, work on the Water
Pollution Control Plant is expected
to begin in October of
this year and completion is
scheduled for January, 1971.

Study Of Water Resources
Governor Rockefeller this
week announced the release of the
results of a joint study by the
Conservation Department's Division
of Water Resources and
the United States Geological Survey.
The study, entitled " An
Atlas of Long Island's Water
Resources", offers a comprehensive
look at the hydro-logical
resource of the area and
proposes several alternative
plans for effectively managing
this vital asset.
The 120- page book brings together,
for the first time, a
broad description of the underground
waters of Long Island,
their uses past and present and
detailed proposals for their future
utilization. This project, as
are other water- resource investigations,
was founded equally by
the State and Federal governments.
The Governor emphasized the
importance of this project, saying
" Long Island is the most
rapidly developing area in the
State and the area where water
problems are mostpressing. Developing
and protecting Long Island's
precious underground water
resources is essential for
continued industrial and metropolitan
development."
Although the Atlas is heavily
supported by technical data, the
simple format and abundant use
of charts and illustrations facilities
understanding by the nontechnical
reader. The publication
was designed to be used by both
lay and professional planners
whose concern is the most effective
use of this resource. The
problems investigated in this
study include chemical, bacteriological
and thermal pollution of
the underground water supply as
well as the shifting equilibrium
between fresh and salty groundwater.
