As We See It

" I'm not a member of the
John Birch Society, but "; " I
urge people to read the Blue
Book and decide for themselves
— " ; " People who criticize the
John Birch Society areanti- anti-
Communist dupes "; " only the
liberal- socialistic clique attacks
the John Birch Society. . . ".
These are some of the comments
we have culled from lett
e r s to the editors of local newspapers.
We don't think you have
to be liberal, socialist, traitor, or
dupe to oppose the John Birch
Society. We think all it takes is a
sound mind, a willingness to wade
through the swamp of John Birch
literature, and a faith in the
American democratic tradition.
For those readers who have
neither the time nor the stomach
to contribute to Mr. Welch's
multi- million dollar publishing
industry, we have decided, as
a public service, to devote this
entire column to the subject of
just what we have against the
John Birch Society. We've included
the source and page numbers
so as to incriminate the
guilty. Anyone wishing to
challenge our research is welcome
to check the sour « . es.
Birchers have consistently
criticized anyone who opposes the
war in Viet Nam as being pro-communist.
Let's see what the
gospel according to St. Robert
of Belmont says about the war.
In a pamphlet entitled " The
Truth About Viet Nam", published
by American Opinion, and
available in American Opinion
Bookstores, ( there's one in Free-port),
Welch asks the question
" Is the obvious lack of any
will to win, on the part of the
Administration, really something
far, worse, and part of a
carefully planned design not to
win, imposed onus by the Communist
influences which are
running the show?" ( p. 13)
On page 19 of the same pamphlet,
Mr. Welch asks whether " our
boys are being consciously and
deliberately murdered to serve
Communist purposes."
We wonder how this view sits
with the families of the soldiers
in Viet Nam.
What about the John Bin h Society
and religion? On page 49
of the Blue Book ( 4th edition)
Welch says that " fully one-third
of the services in at least
the Protestant Churches in
America are helping that trend
( towards socialism). For the
ministers themselves are not
true believers. . ."
Here's an interesting query:
did Hitler have a conscience?
We bet you thought he was one of
the most conscienceless maniac
who ever lived, but you're wrong.
Mr. Welch says on page 54 of the
Blue Book that
" an amoral man like Stalin is
infinitely worse, from the point
of view of humanitarian civilization,
than an immoral man
like Hitler. An immoral man
may lie, steal, and murder
but it hurts his conscience.—
There is the possibility mat
he may — make what amends
he can for his crime."
Remember everything you
learned in school about democracy?
Well, forget it! Welch has
re- written the texts. On page 146-
147 of the Blue Book, we find this
self - incriminating passage.
" Democracy is merely a deceptive
phrase, a weapon of demogo-guery,
and a perennial fraud."
Later on, Welch says that " a Republican
government has many
attractions and advantages, but
it lends itself to. readily to infiltration,
distortion, and disruption."
On page 117 of an
earlier edition of the Blue Book
( the one in our library) Mr.
Welch says " what is not only
needed, but is absolutely imperative,
is for some hard-boiled,
dictatorial, and dynamic
boss to come along and deliver
himself ". ( Guess who?)
Some of the severest criticism
of the John Birch Society comes
directly from sources which
could hardly be called liberal.
Dr. Lester De Koster, for
example, a conservative Presbyterian
scholar, writes in " The
Christian and the John Birch
Society," that " the Blue Book
proclaims a doctrine of God which
the Christian is bound to r e ject."
The Wall Street Journal of
Friday, Sept. 29, 1967, ran a
front page article entitled " John
Birch Blues: Many Top Aids
Quit - They Lay Woes to Founde
r ' s Rigidity, Autocratic Rule."
A former director of the Society,
Slobodan Draskovich, is
quoted as saying " I don't think
the John Birch Society can be
saved." On a recent television
program, Mr. Draskovich expanded
on this theme when he
said " The John Birch Society is
no longer worth saving because
it is the Robert Welch Society."
He added that " Welch's distinction
between a Republic and a
Democracy is unforgiveable."
No one can do a job on the
radical right like a legitimate
conservative. William Buckley,
for instance, writes in the Oct.
19, 1965 issue of the National
Review, " I regret to say that in
my judgement it is impossible
to defend the leadership of the
John Birch Society if one reads
closely even its contemporary
utterances. One continues to
wonder how it is that the membership
of the John Birch Society
tolerates such paranoid and
unpatriotic drivel."
The 1965 report of the California
State Senate Committee
on Un- American Activities concludes
that" — we would e s timate
that the Society has grown
so rapidly that it has attracted
a lunatic fringe that is now a s suming
serious proportions. It

NOTICE LS HEREBY GIVEN, that
a public hearing will be held
by the BOARD OF ZONING APPEALS,
of the Inc. Village of
Earmingdale, at the Village Hall,
361 Main Street, Farmingdale,
N. Y., on April 3rd, 1968, at 8: 00
P. M., prevailing time.
The following cases will be heard:
Case # 5 - 68: Application of
Gerard L. Cote, 40 Melville Road,
for a variance from the requirements
of General Ordinance # 39,
Fences, to permit the enclosure
of the rear yard area by a six
foot stockade fence, beginning at
the most northeasterly end of the
residence, thence easterly 20
feet to the east property line,
southerly approximately 40 feet
to the south line, westerly to a
point in line with rear garage
wall. From this point for a distance
of approximately 66 feet
westerly, to the front property
line facing Melville Road, a 4
foot fence ( cyclone type) is proposed.
The Ordinance restricts
such legal type fencing to the
front wall of the residence.
Case # 6 - 68: Application of
Chester & Mary Broman, 77
Powpll Place, for a variance of
the side yard requirement in
Residential " A" District of 8
feet, by requesting permission
to enlarge the existing garage on
the west side of residence by six
feet, thereby creating a two foot
side yard. The structure westerly
of this residence is the Northside
Elementary School.
Case # 7 - 68: Application of
Angelo Cirri, 925 Fulton Street,
College News
Linda Sue Cotrone, of 675
Conklin St., Farmingdale, has
recently been elected representative
to the Student Senate
of Monmouth College, Monmouth,
Illinois.
William Cowden Jr., of 85
Zoranne Drive, Farmingdale a
senior at Ithaca College, and a
member of the Gymnastics Team
was awarded a letter for his
contributions during the past
season.
Coach Gordon Eggleston said
that Cowden ranks as Ithaca's
all time outstanding gymnast.
He leaves the varsity ranks holding
five of the School's eight
records. He placed either first,
second, or third in practically
all events in three years of
competition.
for a variance of the requirement
of General Ordinance # 39,
Fences, requesting permission
to install a six foot chainlink
type fence, starting at a point
approximately 30 feet north of the
most easterly side property line,
thence westerly 84 feet to connect
to the front wall of the garage,
again beginning atthe northwesterly
end of the garage to a
point approximately 50 feet
northwesterly to rear property
line of residence at # 373 Staples
Street, thence north 72 feet to
northerly property line, easterly
113 feet to east property line,
southerly approximately 150 feet
to place of beginning. The application
notes property vandalism
and extensive damage.
Case # 8 - 68: Application by
Arret Homes, Inc., 917 Broadway,
Massapequa, N. Y., for a
variance from the requirements
of front yard setback in a Residential
" B " District, premises
located at- the northwest intersection
of Fulton and Baldwin
Streets, Farmingdale, N. Y.
The applicant proposes to construct
a single family residence
at the northwest corner of Baldwin
and Fulton Streets with a 24
foot setback from Baldwin Street
and a 20 foot setback from Fulton
Street. A five foot westerly side
yard is also indicated on the plot
plan. Also contrary to plot r e quirement,
this parcel contains
approximately 4752 sq. ft. minimum
requirement is 5,000 sq. ft.
Case # 9 - 68: Application also
by Arret Homes, Inc., for permission
to construct a single
family home westerly of the above
with a front yard setback of 20
feet, as opposed to 25 feet r e quired
by Ordinance. Rear and
side yards shown on plot plan
are sufficient. Front yard deficiencies
in both applications
have been caused by recent
widening of Fulton Street by New
York State Dept. of Public Works.
The plot plan for this residence
shows only 4576 sq. ft., 5,000
required.
All parties and citizens in interest
will be given the opportunity
to be heard with respect to the
above applications.
