Picken Elected Massapequa GOP Leader County Undertakes

Committeeman for nearly 10
years, has been elected to succeed
Nassau County Comptroller
Angelo Roncallo as Republican
Executive Leader in the Massapequa
area.
Roncallo recently stepped up
to the post of Oyster Bay Town
GOP Chairman, succeeding Michael
M. D'Auria, who has received
bipartisan support for a
seat on the State Supreme Court
bench.
Picken, 31, an investigator in
the Nassau Comptroller's office,
has undertaken key assignments
in past Republican campaigns in
Oyster Bay Township. Last Fall,
he served as campaign manager
for Roncallo in his successful
race for Comptroller, defeating
Democrat Peter J. Rocchio by
23,000 votes.
Picken is Vice President and a
former board member of the
Massapequa Republican Club, a
charter member of the Massapequa
Elks and a member of the
Massapequa Kiwanis Club. He r e ceived
a Bachelor of Science
degree from C. W. Post College
and his law degree from New York
Law School.
Picken is married to the
former Barbara Koropchak and
has lived in Massapequa for 30
years. He is the son of Mrs. Robert
E. Picken of Massapequa. His
father, now deceased, also served
as a Republican committeeman
and as a member of the Plain-edge
School Board. The Robert
E. Picken School on Hicksville
Road was named in his honor.
A study by Nassau County of
its bus transportation system,
which has been underway since
May, will be aided by a grant
of $ 25,014 in federal funds.
The study, covering fare structure,
routes, service and transfer
points, will be completed
in time to pr ovide recommendations
for improvements before
the expiration of the current bus
franchises on December 31 of
this year, County Executive Eugene
Nickerson stated.
The federal grant will cover
two - thirds of the total cost
of the study, with the county providing
the remaining one - third
in the form of personnel services.
Conducting the study is the
Nassau County Planning Commission
in cooperation with the
County Department of Transportation
and Franchise. Assisting
also is die Bus Franchise
Council, representing the bus
company owners.
The County Executive invited
bus riders and other members
of the public to forward their
own suggestions for improved
service to the Nassau County
Planning Commission, at 240 Old
Country Road, Mineola.
Suspend Little Town
Halls For Summer
The Oyster Bay Town Coun-cilmen
will suspend use of their
Little Town Halls for the summer,
Town Board Majority Leader
Ralph J. Marino announced
this week.
The Little Town Halls, a concept
developed last year to accommodate
residents in the evenings
who could not attend Town
Board meetings during the day,
will resume in the fall.
Representing over 70 years of fire service to North
Massaiequa are Ex Chief Fred Penna with over 20 years, Charles
Becker with over 25 years, part of which was in the East Rock-away
Fire Department, and Vincent J. Ranieri, coach of the
Witch Doktors, State Champion Rescue Team with over 25 years
of service.

Town Board Majority Leader
Ralph J. Marino said an amend -
ment to the town's rules and
regulations has been adopted,
restricting the boat- launching
ramps on weekends and holidays
to those who own their own boats
and trailers, in order to facilitate
the use of the town's boat-launching
ramps by residents.
A commercial boat is defined
as one which is launched by a
boat firm for a fee.
Working On Plainedge
Sidewalk Problem
Town of Oyster Bay Councilman

assisted by Councilman
Philip Healey of Massapequa are
working on the Plainedge school
district's need for s i d e w a l ks
along Hicksville Road to correct
a hazardous situation for walking
school children. The Council-men
are studying the construction
: if temporary sidewalks as an
interim measure since the State
will soon widen Hicksville Poad
tearing up any improved side
walks.
Boll Field Over
Wafer Shed?
Efforts are being made to
secure a ball field for the Plain-edge
area by Town of Oyster
Bay Councilmen Philip Healey
of Massapequa and Frank Hynes
of Farmingdale. The four acre
site on Hicksville Road next to
Southern State Parkway belongs
to the South Farmingdale Water
District. The Town wants the
surface rights and the water district
would retain the w a t er
rights. If the plan becomes a
reality, the Town of Oyster Bay
will install lights for night ball
playing.
The Councilmen are working
with Ray Mendez, Commissioner
of the Plainedge Baseball
Leagues.
