State Could Assure Depressed
Grade Crossing: Petito
Board Majority Favors
Depressed Grade Crossing
Oyster Day Town Supervisor
Michael N. Petito, following a
series of on- the- spot inspections
of conditions at railroad
grade crossings in E3ethpage, said
this week he is prepared to lead
a fight for state funds to secure
depressed grade crossing eliminations
for the area. The Supervisor
sent a letter to Dr.
William J. Ronan, Chairman of
the Metropolitan Commuter
Transportation Authority ( MC-TA)
seeking to determine what
amount of funds from the recently
passed state Transportation
Bond Issue are available for
the project.
" From the quotes we've
been hearing from state officials,
including the governor," Petito
stated, " Long Islanders haven't
got very much to look forward to.
Yet our support was needed to
pass Rockefeller's very costly
program." He said he has
secured the support of the Nassau
County Department of Transportation
and Franchises for the
depressed tracks. The Supervisor
said he will also seek unanimous
support of his position
from the Town Board.
Named by Supervisor Petito as
representative to the Bethpage
Committee to Preserve the Community
was Marvin Wagner. The
Committee is sponsoring a meeting
on Friday, January 26th, at
Bethpage High School at 8 p. m.
Petito said that while some officials
in the State Department
of Public Works have said they
will give consideration to depressing
the Long Island Raili oad
tracks in the Bethpage elinina-

tion project, he is fearful they
may be paying mere lip service
to local residents. He pointed
to Dr. Ronan's recent statement
that most of the State Bond issue
funds, running into billions of dol-dars,
will be used for the New
York City Subway system.
" We are aware of the need
for improved subways," Petito
said, " however, it would be a
disservice to the residents of
Long Island to ignore their pleas
at this time. The planned grade
crossing elimination project is
one of the most important developments
over faced by Bethpage
residents." Petito added
that his talks with community
leaders have convinced him that
elevating the tracks would be " an
esthetic nightmare."
Petito urged local residents to
keep the pressure on Governor
Rockefeller and other state officials
to insure against " promises
without performance."

Town Majority Leader Ralph J.
Marino this week reiterated the
Majority's support for the residents
of Bethpage in their endeavors
to secure a depressed
grade crossing elimination in
the community. A representative
of the Board Majority appeared
before the Joint Legislative
Committee on Metropolitan
Transportation at a public
hearing held at Hofstra University
to restate the Board's position,
Marino said.
The Majority Leader pointed
out that in October of 1967 he had
been assured by the office of
Austin Sarr of the State Department
of Public Works that full
consideration would be given to
" our recommendation that the
depressed track method be used
when and if the construction plans
are forwarded to the Public Service
Commission for public hearings
and final approval.
" We are going to watch the
progress of these plans very
closely and we want them to r e flect
the wishes of the people of
Bethpage." He added that, from
an esthetic and practical point of
view, the grade crossing elimination
should be depressed to insure
preservation of the community.
