Statement
This issue is an extra
E l e c t i o n Day Farmingdale
Observer newspaper,
which we felt
compelled to publish b e cause
we have so much
more to say to the Farmingdale
community. Although
the hours are
brief, we were inspired
by the words of Vice
President Hubert Humphrey,
" We still have
three glorious days, all
day Sunday, all day Monday
and all day Tuesday.
He said these words at
MacArthur Airport on
Saturday, while this r e porter
stood on the press
platform. He said there
were many people who
I , uU ~ •*• made up their
minds until now ana
many who still did not
know how to vote, so
every hour even on
Tuesday still counted.
After listening to the
inspiring words reported
in this special election
issue lead story, we
realized that Humphrey
is today, the same man
who was an outstanding
S e n a t o r and an able,
, May or.
We felt
a moral obligation, to
publish this small extra
Farmingdale Observer
edition. May it be of
help to you our r e a d e r s,
because it was only ten
short days ago. I personally
did not know for
whom to cast my vote
on the top ticket. Perhaps
the evolution of my
thinking after seeking
help through prayer to
come to the right conclusion
for myself, may
be of help to one of you.
We also felt ashamed
that we had written a
left - handed endorsement
of Humphrey, who
we now see as a very
great man. It took us
time to see the light,
I hope that the evolution
of the way we came
to this conclusion will be
of help to us all. Thank
you., Caroline Bunting

co- editor of The Farmingdale
Observer.
O'Doimefl Confident
9th AD
William G. OTJonnell, the Democratic
Candidate for Assemblyman
in the 9th AD encompassing
South Farmingdale, North Mass-apequa,
Massapequa Park and all
of Massapequa expressed hisap-preciation
to his campaign staff
as well as expressed his great
feeling of enthusiasm for victory
on election day. OTJonnell spoke
at a final rally at his headquarters,
1019 Park Boulevard, Massapequa
Park.
" I cant tell you how encouraged
I am about the endorsements
I have received from practically
every segment of the community.
He specifically mentioned,
" The Committee for the
Equitable Financing of Quality
Public School Education". He
said that this was a bi- partisan
committee made up of educators,
community leaders and leading
citizens from the Farmingdale,
Massapequa and Plainedge school
districts, who have been fighting
for years for a broader tax base
to finance public schools
O'Donnell continued, " I am
equally pleased by the endorse-ineiu
% * « > many Other community
ar>'- civic groups and by so
n. any discerning newspaper publishers."
The Democratic candidate said
that his positive stand on the
major issues facing the community
and the recognition by the
people of the community of these
issues and the solutions he has
offered has played a major part
in the support he is receiving.
Ginsberg Issues Rebutal
8th AD
Assemblyman Martin Ginsberg,
who is running for reelection
to the New York State Assembly
in the 8th AD issued this
statement to this special edition
of the Farmingdale Observer,
' directed to the voters in The
Incorporated Village of Farming-dale.
Due to last minute ' smear'cam-paign
literature from my Democratic
opponent, I would like to
state the following to your readers:
" The Urban Development
Corporation Act is slum clearance
bill that only applies to the
blighted deteriorated apd unsanitary
areas within the big cities
of our state. It has no application
whatsoever to Nassau
County. Almost every Republican
and every Democrat voted for this
bill to help clean up some of
the slums in the cities, but primarily
because thi s slum clearance
program in our state is being
attempted through the use of private
enterprise and private construction
companies and private
monies at no cost to the taxpayers
of our state.
The Democratic Candidate in
the 8th Assembly district has
raised the scare of high rise
apartments and low income public
housing in the 8th Assembly
district as a result of this bill.
This is completely false and unfounded,
since this bill has no
application in the county of
Nassau. Approximately 150sites
have already been chosen for this
slum clearance program, not one
in the county of Nassau. Scare
tactics by the Democrat candidate
is apparently the only way he believes
that he can raise a campaign
issue.
Humphrey's Visit Here Saturday
by Caroline Bunting Klesh
Plans for the arrival of Vice President of the United States Hubert Humphrey
on Saturday were changed at the last minute Wednesday night, from the
Republic Aviation Airport in Farmingdale to the MacArthur Airport in
Bohemia. This reporter sent in her press credentials for clearance to
be assigned to the Nassau County press bus to cover the event. She also
asked for permission that her Rotary Exchange student from Mexico Jose
Escalante, a student at the Farmingdale Senior High School be allowed to
go with* her. First the answer was ' no* that Nassau County Press cards
including finger prints were necessary for Secret Service clearance, but
then came a second call in the evening, Jack English Nassau County Democ
r a t i c Leader would personally vouch for Jose and that he is welcome
to come. District Rotary Exchange Club Chairman, Pete Pellaton said
' fine this is an excellent experience for a Rotary Exchange student to have
in seeing first hand United States politics at work. He will be able to
c a r r y back to his country, a first hand impression of a very historic moment
in the history of the United States.
Jose, Observer photographer Jackson Pokress, who also happens to be
President of the Long Island Press Photographer Association and I went
to Mineola. We boarded the press bus and together with daily newspaper
photographers and reporters, and radio news men, we were escorted by
Nassau County Police to the Suffolk Line and by Suffolk County Police to
iviaoA xTtiur,
There was the hoopla of American politics. There were folk singers
entertaining the crowds, pretty girls wearing straw hats for the Humphrey-
Muskie team, small boys giving out Humphrey buttons and stickers and two
platforms,— one for the dignitaries and one for the press corps. After
getting Jose a coke, cheese sandwich and ice cream in what seemed like a
long time so deep were the crowds at the lunch counter this reporter
stepped up on the press platform. Soon four bus loads of New York City
press corps joined us on the platform. I talked with a Negro newsman,
assigned by NBC. He showed me his membership card to a Republican Club,
and said he was another Republican voting for Humphrey. I looked over to the
dignitaries platform and through sign language and holding up Farming-
