Pur cell said that there was a
difference between the JBS in
1963 and in later years. He cited
that the first findings of the California
State Senate Commission
on un- American Activities which
were published in 1963 whose
members were right- wing, said
that the JBS was not a subversive
organization. And this is the r e port
that is widely quoted by JBS
members. " What they fail to do
is to quote the second reports-published
in 1965 by the same
Commission, concluded, " . . .
we would estimate that the Society
has grown so rapidly that
is has attracted a lunatic fringe
that is now assuming serious
proportions. It has been beset
by an influx of emotionally unstable
people, some of whom
have been prosecuted by the
courts for their hoodlum tactics.

documentary film that had been
produced by a major television
network entitled " Star Spangled
Extremists" was shown by Pur-cell
and FACT. The film depicted
the similarity between the far
left groups and the * radical
rights'. Both the radical rights
and the radical lefts were big
on hate; they each set up front
groups and distribute propaganda;
have " patriotic' book shops' and
of all trade on being on the only
true ' Americans',, Thefilmshowed
" radical right' groups as always
campaigning to have books
banned in libraries and always
proposing that their own books
and reports go on to the shelves
of public libraries.
Purcell concluded his remarks
by saying that anti- Birch people
could finally win and he has seen
it in other parts of the United
States where Birchers had taken
over. " But the price is eternal
vigilance. People in our community
would have to take an interest
and be active, rather than
sit back and expect school, library
boards to do the work".
The meeting was chaired by
Vincent A. Simone, President of
FACT. During the question and
answer period Simone told Alfred
Weyhreter, who identified
himself as a Nassau County section
leader for the John Birch
Society, that he would like to a r range
a public forum featuring
the JBS society's spokesmen
and their opponents. Purcell
agreed to come back to FACT in
Farmingdale for this some time
in January, if the other FACT
executive committee members
agreed with Simone's decision.
Weyhreter immediately accepted
Simone's offer, as did
Carl E. Gorton and Edward H.

Werner, two Farmingdale members
of the John Birch Society.
Weyhreter, who referred to
Purcell as « Jim » told the audience,
" We dont want power. All we
want is influence."
Gorton rose during the period
of public participation and told
' Jim' that he should have used
his name when referring to him
in his talk. Purcell had referred
to Gorton in his talk by description,
not by name as he did when
he reviewed his remarks on the
California State Senate Committee
on Un- American Activities
when Gorton quoted the 1963 r e port
rather than the 1965 report.
Werner also asked questions
from the floor.
Simone had introduced the
meeting as an " educational one".
The first speaker, on an entirely
different subject, was Democratic
Candidate William G. O'Donnell,
who spoke on his plan for state
aid monies for education which
could reduce District 22 taxes
by $ 2 per hundred of assessed
valuation ..

It's not fair to this board nor
to this district with this kind of
accusation, Weathers stated.
Trustee Roy Spinetta offered
a resolution that board members
should have a ten day notice

before he could approve them
intelligently.
The motion was tabled by a
5- 2 vote with Spinetta and Mol-lineaux
voting for the ten day
