Downs Dunkers
In the opening round of the Ber-ner
Teenage basketball Tournament,
the Section I Champions,
the Jive Five defeated the Section
II Champions, the Dunkers 30- 21.
The Champs were led by Ed Wa-tro
with 13 points while Carl Hy-man
with 6 points and Dennis Dym
with eight points paced the Dunkers.
The second game saw the Pub-bers
defeat the Royals 36- 20.
In the hard fought contest, the
all around strength of the the rubbers
proved too much for the Royals.
Bill Oxberry and Bull Sen-ese
were high for die Pubbers
with 12 and six points respectively.
Bobby Slang had 12
points for the Royals.
The Hustlers advanced to the
next round of the Tournament by
whipping the Gazzels 32- 10. Tom
Reade had a hot round for the
Hustlers, putting in 19 points.
Big Don Herring led the Gazzels
with six points.

Chiefs Must Win
To Stay With Calhoun
Massapequa High split a pair
of South Shore I League basketball
games this past week and
dropped out of a first place tie
with Calhoun.
An underdog Mepham squad
caught the Chiefs on an off-night
and clobbered the contenders
by a 75- 42 score. The
Pequans were held to a total of
two points in the first quarter.
The Jay- Vee's, on the other hand,
defeated their Mepham counterparts
58- 52 with Mike Barrett » s
33 points leading the way. Barrett,
a sophomore, was promoted
to the varsity squad after his
recent Jayvee performances.
Arden Sterling made his debut
as a starter as the Chiefs beat an
Oceanside five by a score of
69- 55. Larry Flamia led the
way with 24 markers with Bob
Bontemps chalking up 13 points.
Massapequa, which is now
eight and two in league play will
take on league leading Calhoun
this Friday in an away game
slated for 8 p. m. Calhoun has
tasted defeat once in league action
while the Pequans have an
8- 2 record.
The Jayvees lost their first
game of the season to Oceanside
52- 47 breaking a 13 game winning
streak. The little Chiefs are now
13- 1 overall.
Da/ ers Two Point Periods
End In Twin Defeats
Farmingdale High was able to
score only two points in the
third quarter against North Shore
as a close 32- 27 basketball game
was broken wide open as the
Dalers fell behind 61- 28 at the
third quarter mark. The final
score was 82- 54. David Mable-ton
with 22 points, was the only
Daler to hit double figures.
Coach Bob Mulligan's lads took
on Syosset on Wednesday of this
week and after a close three
quarters of play faded in the
final stanza to lose 58- 45. Farmingdale
scored only one field
goal in the second quarter as
their 11- 6 first quarter lead became
a 22- 19 deficit. Mable-ton
again led the scoring with
19 points.
This Friday the Dalers will
play host to Plainedge in an
8: 00 p. m. game followed by an
away game with MacArthur on
Tuesday.
Berner Bows In Final
Minute Of Play 53- 50
With less than one minute to
play, Berner High School led
Lawrence 50- 49 when the visitors
Norm Kearney stole the ball to
put Lawrence ahead for a close
win that ended 53- 50.
Berner held leads of 9- 8,28- 26
and 44- 41 at the end of each of
the first three quarters before the
favored visitors were able to
muster the winning basket.
Coach Chris Sweeney's squad
hase a Friday home game with
Elmont at 8 p. m. and a Tuesday
away encounter with Freeport.

give the school 7- 0 league
