With Fall Semester

Students will be heading skyward
at the State University of New
York College in Farmingdalethis
fall with the introduction of a
program in Aircraft Pilot Technology.
The first of its kind to be offered
by a college in the Northeast,
( he program will provide
the necessary flight training
needed to obtain the private pilot
license and the advanced ground
school theory essential for future
study toward a commercial pilot
rating.
The flight training program at
Farmingdale will be an option
within the college's department
of Aircraft Operations Technology,
and will have an initial
enrollment of 50 students. Those
successfully completing the two-year
course of study will be
awarded the Associate in Applied
Science degree.
To be eligible for the program
applicants must be graduates
of approved four year high
schools, or hold a high school
equivalency diploma, and must
have a minimum of 16 units of
high school credit which should
include one unit of physics and
two and- a- half units of mathematics,
with Intermediate Algebra.
Students electing the flight
training option will be required
to obtain a Second Class Medical
Certificate, which is required
by the Federal Aviation Agency
for qualification beyond the private
pilot rating. Details on the
physical requirements may be
obtained from the college's Office
of Admissions.
During the first year, emphasis
will be placed on aircraft systems
and aerodynamics with cor-esponding
work in mathematics
and physics.
In the second year, theory will
include air navigation, air traffic
procedures, powerplants, and
meterology.
To complement the technical
aspects of the program, students
will also take courses in the
humanities and social sciences
through the college's division of
general education.
Actual flight training will be
conducted in the second year, beginning
witli the fall semester of
1968, and will consist of an
average of 20 to 25 hours of dual
instruction and an average of 15
to 20 primary solo hours. Students
will pay $ 6 for each hour
of flight instruction.
