At Ground Breaking
Marine Killed
In Action
A 20 year old Mirine, who had
worked at Medine's Haberdashery
on MainStreel, Farmingdale,
for a number of years was killed
in action in Vietnam last week.
The young man, Pfc. ( ieorge T.
Vollmar ofDreckelAvenue, Melville
was killed on Sunday, according
to his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. ( ieorge A. Vollmar. He was
the 65th Long Islander to die in
Vietnam. He had been on patrol
in the Da Nang area.
Vollmar was graduated from
Half Hollow Hills High School in
1964. Last June, he enlisted for
two years in the Marine Corps
and left the U. S. for Vietnam on
December 3. Mrs. Vollmar said
that her son, who was a member
of the First Battalion, 26th Marines,
had participated in numerous
patrols before his death.
" George felt there was a definite
job to be done", she said, " but
he was homesick. Besides his
parents, he is survived by his
brother, Wayne, 18 and a sister,
Suzanne, 13. Funeral arrangements
have not as yet been completed.
Servicemen Seek
Farmingdale Correspondents
Dr. Morris Fond, President
of- the Metropolitan Region of
the United Synagogue of America,
will be the main speaker
at Groundbreaking Ceremonies
this Sunday for the Farmingdale
Jewish Center's expanded building.
Dr. Fond served in the Army
Medical Corp during World War
II and was Chief Medical Officer
for O. S. S. in the European
Theater of Operations.
The Jewish Center will add
an extension to its present school
building, and an attached main
Synagogue and social Hall. The
new buidling will include new
classrooms, a library, office,
choir, and study facilities as
well as adequate worship facilities
for the growing Congregation.
Mr. Harry Schneidkraut, of
64 Melville Road, Farmingdale,
who is the Senior Honorary
Trustee of the Congregation, and
lay religious leader, will conduct
the preliminary morning Service
at 10: 00 a. m. The groundbreaking
exercises will begin at 11: 00
a. m. with Jack J. Tenen, President,
residing. Rabbi Paul
Teicher and Cantor Herbert Harr
i s will be assisted by the Junior
and Adult Choirs.

Dr. Charles W. Laffin, Jr.,
president of the State University
Agricultural and Technical College
at Farmingdale, has been
elected to the Board of Directors
of the American Association of
Junior Colleges.
The college president's election
to the Board came during
the Association's 47th Annual
Convention held in San Francisco
last week. The 1800 delegates
representing the 50 states
selected Dr. Laffin for a three-year
term on, the Board.
For the past two decades, Dr.
Laffin has been active in the
Association having served as the
1956 convention chairman for
the annual meeting in New York
City as well as Jiaving served
two terms on a Commission for
Student Personnel.
He was also the chairman of a
sub- committee which conducted
a two- year, nation- wide survey
on " Outstanding Practices in
Student Personnel Programs in
American Two Year Colleges."
