St. Kilians Founded In 1896 Grows To 3,500 Families
The St. Kilian Roman Catholic Church in Farmingdale was
founded in 1896 with the Rev. Gerald Spielmann O. S. B. as the
first pastor. He served until 1909 and in recognition of his efforts
a street was named in his behalf.
Several pastors followed, including Father Roman, Father
Joseph and Father Raphael who was appointed to his present
post in 1955.
Ground- breaking for St. Kilian* s first school took place in 1925
when the parish numbered 155 families. The new school was
completed in 1963 with a present enrollment of 1,302 pupils.
A 1000 seat auditorium also serves as additional space for
the overflow of Sunday Masses for the 3,500 families in the
parish.
The school is staffed by Dominican Sisters and ground
breaking for a new convent is scheduled for next month.
Groups within St. Kilian* s which have assisted in the parish
growth included the Knights of Columbus, the Mother's Club,
Holy Name Society, Men's Nocturnal Society, Altar Society,
Squires, Squirettes,, Columbians and Columbiettes.
The Church has become well known for its church choirs.
Both the Men and Women's choirs include members of many
faiths and the groups participate in a number of public conc
e r t s .
The well known St. Kilian Boychoir was founded 12 years
ago by Father Raphael Schoof O. S. B. to furnish music for the
liturgy of the church. Sister Jeanne Monica and later Conductor
Arpad Darazs led the choir to national prominence. Radio
and television performances followed and a recording with
Andre Kostalanetz enjoyed world wide distribution. The group
will also appear at Lincoln Center for the second summer
in a row.
This year, the group was taken over by Herman Furthmoser,
formerly with the Vienna Boys Choir and the Vienna State
Orchestra.
Over the years, assistant pastors have played an important
part in the growth of the church. Last year Father Jeremiah
was honored as the Man of the Year at the Annual Brotherhood
Day.
The church now conducts 13 Masses on Sunday to accommodate
the 3,500 families who worship at the church.

years this unit has served the
Farmingdale area offering a program
of aviation orientation and
aerospace education to students
between the ages of 13 through
17. Senior members serving as
leaders and instructors devote
endless hours to the student program
which includes class room
instruction, field trips, encampments
and actual flying experience.
Under the command of Captain
Irving Friedman, die local unit
has one of the most active programs
in all of New York State.
90 cadets and 27 seniors have
made it an outstanding squadron.
During this past year several
honors were brought to Farming-dale
as a result of die unit's

activities. The Cadet section of
• Long Island Group recently presented
me senior members of
Squadron V with a plaque in
appreciation of dieir cooperation..
The unit received a second place
award for a recruiting display.
Just this past week, die National
headquarters announced that
die local unit was number one in
Information Service activities for
1966. Squadron V placed eighth
in die country for its public and
community relations program.
Seven cadets received dieir Certificate
of Proficiency noting outstanding
accomplishments in
study and leadership for die year.
The unit participated in several
air search and rescue missions,
Metro Air Support ' 66 and civi"
defense drills. Through all of
" these activities, die cadets as
teen- agers become the pride of
the community as they assume
roles of leadership in aerospace
and aviation careers.
Squadron V is one of 20 units
in Nassau and Suffolk under die
leadership of Lt.£ olonel Howard
L. Wirtz of Farmingdale, Commander,
Long Island Group CAP.
In May of 1966, Col. Wirtz was presented
with a trophy from the
New York Wing for die outstanding
performance of die Group
in overall operations and cadet
flying orientation programs. It
was the tiiird year in succession.
Long Island took the trophy.

Of Funeral Directors
The first White Funeral Home
was established in New York City
on Greene Street by John J . White.
His son Francis A. White, Sr.,
moved to Amityville, and began
his business in 1879. The enterprise
continued under die operation
of Francis A. White, J r . and
Arthur F. White. The Funeral
Home in Amityville was discontinued
in 1931 and moved to
Conklin Street in Farmingdale,
in die Marion E. Smith Building,
next to the present library building.
The business continued at
diis address until 1929 when the
Methodist Parsonage was purchased.
In 1935 the first addition
was made to this building. In 1946
a branch was opened at 234
Broadway, Bethpage. In 1954,
1960 and 1967 new additions were
added to the main office in Farmingdale.
Present personnel include; Arthur

M. Williams, Treasurer and Robert
A. White, Secretary.
