District 22
The District 22 Board of Education
showed deep concern over
a letter received from the New
York State School Board's Association
at last Monday's meeting.
The letter stated that State
School Board Association declined
to support the urging of a
special session of the State Legislature
to do something about
additional State Aid. The reason
given was that " it was not politically
expedient at this time".
A motion was passed to send
a strongly worded letter immediately
to the New York State
School Board's Association to let
them know that this district is
more interested ineducationthan
the ' prudence of political implications.'
The number of resubmitted
Nassau school budgets,
which were defeated for a second
time, was pointed out as one of
the urgent reasons given for reconsideration.
School Board
President Mrs. Lucile Goulding
and delegate A. Terry Weathers
were delegated to draft the letter.
Copies are to be mailed to
other Long Island School Boards.
Three new courses were proposed
for the curriculum this
coming year. New topics in American
Literature, Set Construction
and Set Design. The first
was passed, but Trustee Bernard
Lang took exception to the
other two saying that the supportive
evidence did not indicate
anything but extra curricular
activity. The other board members
agreed to discuss these two
courses at a later date.
A presentation on Program Instruction,
held at the East Memorial
School was given by Stanley
Saltzman and two members of
the staff. He showed how the
use of supplementary materials,
in addition to books, were used
to instruct childrenat that school.
During public participation, a
question was asked from the audience
why a qualified teacher could
not teach sex education in the
schools. Superintendent of
Schools Dr. William A. Kinzler
said that he was looking into the
matter and that perhaps a course
could be taught in adult education
for parents.
A representative of the architectural
firm of Knappe and Johnson
reported that the basic design
for the high school extension
was now completed and that
they were working on the contract
documents and that bids
would probably be awarded in
November.
Trustee Thomas La van reported
on the public relations
aspects of the school district.
He said that over 900 voters had
lost their voting privilege at the
last electioa He said, however,
that 1014 were registered last
Saturday making a total of 7,914
registered for this Saturday's
vote.
Over 2,000 adults participated
in the Adult Education program.
The 155 senior citizens in the
program who are now meeting
in a local church, will be meeting
in the Sons of Italy Hall next fall,
it was learned.
The board spent considerable
time discussing a policy of supplying
a list of names and addresses
of Senior class students
to State legislators on their requests.
The matter was tabled
by a 4- 2 vote.

" THE SPINAL COLUMN"
Its Function and Malfunction
Before we discuss the spinal
column, we must first be clear
as to what its function is.
First as a weight carrying
organ. Secondly as an organ
which protects the nerves.
Third as an organ of movement.
The function of the spinal
column as an organ of carriage
and movement comes
into conflict with its function
as a protective channel for
the nervous system.
Because of its inseparable
connection with the nervous
system and as a result of its
central position as an axis,
the spinal column finds itself
