Ginsberg Seeks Better Train
For Handicapped
Daniel Ftf. O'Hara, right, County Commander of the American
Legion, presents an award to Nassau Police Commissioner Francis
B. Looney of Farmingdale, left, for " outstanding service to the
community", Looking on, center is County Executive Eugene H.
Nickerson.
A plan designed to make
the Long Island Railroad more
accessible for use by the physically
handicapped will be proposed
by Assemblyman Martin
Ginsberg to Dr. William Ronan,
Chairman of the Metropolitan
Commuter Transportation Authority
when they meetthisweek.
According to Ginsberg the
Railroad now lacks facilities
to accmodate the physically handicapped
who wish to use the line
but cannot because of the severe
difficulties imposed by present
design of railroad stations and
cars.
" There are thousands of physically
handicapped living on
Long Island, who must rely on
autos to get anywhere," said
Ginsberg. " I know from conversations,
letters and meetings
I have held with individuals and
organizations of the handicapped
that the majority would prefer
using the railroad, if it were
physically possible to do so,
rather than bucking traffic and
seeking parking in the crowded
city."
Ginsberg will urge Dr. Ronan
to have the Metropolitan Commuter
Transportation Authority
include in its design for new railroad
cars, specifications for
wider doors, sliding doors and
specially marked cars with wider
aisles to ease the problem of
those using wheel chairs, canes,
crutches and other appliances.
• 1 will also suggest," said
Ginsberg, « « the raising of station
platforms to meet car platforms
and to install ramps, instead
of stairs where practicable.
This will ease the burden of the
handicapped and will also make ft
possible for the railroad to make
money that it is now letting
dribble away."
The term " physically handicapped,"
the Assemblyman
noted, includes not only those with
visible handicaps, who use wheel
chairs, braces and canes but also
the elderly and those with heart
conditions.
