E p p PreSSeS For P o o l O r d i n a n c e Nainedge Splits In Season Finale
In a news release this week,
Massapequa Park village minority
T rustee Peter Epp stated
that, " elected officials are sometimes
forced to make a decision
between what might be popular
sentiment of a vociferous few or
what is good for the public health,
welfare and safety".
Whether to have a swimming
pool ordinance or not is such
an issue. " I strongly favor a
safe, sound and sensible ordinance,"
Epp declared.
A trustee of the Civics Party
majority members of the board
advocated at Monday's meeting
amending the present ordinance
to deal with below ground pools
or deck type above ground pools.
Another Trustee advocated an
education program in safety precautions
for homeowners with
pools. " This is fine, as a supplement
to an ordinance but not
alone," Epp stated. " This same
principle could apply in other
situations. If the majority party
feels that a safety education program
is sufficient for omitting a
pool ordinance Jr. om our local
law, why not a driver education
program so we can remove full
stop signs and traffic lights?"
" Out pool committee, made
up of five dedicated citizens,
have spent many months preparing
a draft for a proposed
pool ordinance which I consider
an excellent basis for a safe,
sound pool ordinanace. Now all
their efforts are about to be
tossed out the window by what I
consider illogical conclusions
based , on highly imaginative
theories. Theories are fine but
sometimes they prove impracticable.
An Ordinance is practicable."
In answer to a question about
the liability of the homeowner,
should a drowning occur on his
property, Epp stated " Although
Student Job Hunters Should Apply
Now For Social Security Number
Spring is summer job hunting
season for many high school
and college students. Students
who will be taking a job for the
first time and will need a social
security number were urged by
Andrew Hufnagel, Acting social
security district manager, to apply
now and avoid the June rush.
Hufnagel stated that, by applying
now, the student will avoid unnecessary
delay.
In June the number of applications
for social security cards
is four to five times greater than
in the other months of the year
and as a result, some delays occur.
Since employers need to see
a new employee's social security
card before he goes on duty, getting
the card late could cause
a delay in starting work, and
might result in missing a good
job opportunity.
He concluded by advising students
not to wait until school is
out to apply for their social security
numbers. Applications
may be obtained from the Free-port
social security district office
located at 59 No. Main Street,
telephone No. 868- 7100, or from
local post offices. Applications
picked up at the post office must
be sent to the Social Security Office
after being completed.
it would be a test case, legislation
has been provided stating that
if the homeowner has complied
with local ordinances regarding
safety regulations, he would not
be libel. So in a sense the protection
you provide for your pool
is like insurance. However, if no
safety precautions are taken the
homeowner could possibly find
himself in financial jeopardy for
the rest of his life. I am also
concerned with the village role
in a libel suit. Without legislation
regarding swimming pools the
unfortunate parents of a drowned
child might sue the village taxpayers
for negligence in legislation,
particularly since the surrounding
areas, towns etc. do
have pool ordinances.
" I could not justify my position
as a trustee if, as a result of
non- legislation, a drowning occurred
in Massapequa Park that
could have been prevented by
safety regulations," Epp concluded.

Keefe is mailing 7500 notices to
residents who have not yet obtained
their 1967 dog license
tags.
In accordance with the New
York State Department of Agriculture
and Markets Law, delinquent
dog owners are to r e ceive
summonses. It is expected
that the mailing of these notices
will greatly reduce the number of
summonses that will ultimately
be issued.
It was estimated that the dog
population will exceed 26,000 this
year in the Town of Oyster Bay.
