During the meeting, Philip Boss read the following statement
from the Rev. Kenneth E. Hoover, Pastor of the Farmingdale
Methodist Church. It read as follows:
" Dear Friends:
In the current turmoil in our library community brought
on by the mistaken fanatical zeal of a self- appointed dicto-torial
censor, I should like to add my voice to the cause of
those who view the public library as a citizen's trust in the
continuing search for truth wherever it may be found."
" I am apprehensive of anyone who, however, sincere, sets
himself up as the sole arbiter of what is good or bad, pure or
impure, moral or immoral. No human being has that much
wisdom or information, much less a person so misguided
as to openly espouse the John Birch Society. Such loyalty
to a group using the very methods deplored in other totalitarian
societies betrays a narrow undiscriminating mind. Such
a person can be of limited value in the direction of a public
l i b r a r y ."
" As a friend of our Farmingdale Public Library, I would
look forward to educating our patrons to enjoy the best that
a library can stock, to shun the vulgar and the tasteless, and
to enjoy seeking truth where it may be found. Such standards
are not always easy to come by but the result is worth working
for in our democratic society."
At the meeting Gorton asked to make clear his position
since there was so much discussion on the right of the Freedom,
to Read. He said that he was thoroughly in support of the
philosophy that every adult had the right to read whatever
Gorton made the following statement to the OBSERVER,
" Inasmuch as the ' Fiends' the Farmingdale Library have
deemed me unworthy of membership in their " democratic
organization", I herewith announce the formation of a responsible
organization to be named the Community Association
for Responsible Libraries. The function of this association
will be to review, recommend, approve or critize library
policy. Anyone interested in joing CARL may contact me to
attend an organization meeting to be held soon.!!
In the meantime a clergyman's forum with various members
of the clergy discussing pornography and censorship has been
tentatively scheduled for June 8 by the Friends of the Farming-dale
Library. Acceptances have come from the Rev. Kenneth
E0 Hooever, Pastor of the Farmingdale Methodist Church,
Rabbi Teicher, of the Farmingdale Jewish Center, the Rev.
Albert Palmer, Rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and
Father Basil of St. Kilian's R. C. Church.
Saturday night Gorton appeared on the Alan Burke Television
program and explained why he had confiscated the Paris Review.
Burke tried to say that he had ' stolen' the book, George
Fain, Vice President of the Friends of the Library spoke in
rebuttal to Gorton and Ed Werner of North Massapequa asked
why the obscene material was available to children in the l i brary.
Fain attempted to make the point that Gorton had been
elected due to the ignorance of the voters and that Gorton's
membership in the John Birch Society was not an issue in
the campaign. Gorton pointed out that the entire story was
made known by the Farmingdale Observer a week before
the election and read the April 27th story headline which
read " Gorton Finds ' Pornographic' Passage in Magazine at
Farmingdale Public Library; Decides to Run For Trustee."
Oyster Bay Beaches, Parks Open For Summer Season
Oyster Bay Town's beach and
park facilities will officially open
the weekend of Memorial Day for
town residents.
The variety of facilities include
surf swimming in the Atlantic
Ocean at Tobay Beach; surf
