Virgilio Falci is a Rotary exchange
student at FIIS. Me is 17
and his home is in Helo Horiz-onte,
Brazil. Virgilio has become
somewhat of a celebrity
around the school. During the
soccer season he was the star
player, scoring 11 out of approximately
14 goals,, Unfortunately,
he was only, able to
take part in the first six games„
During the sixth game Virgilio
collided with a player of the opposing
team and sustained an
injury to the face for which he
was hospitalized,, We are thankful
that the injury was not serious
and that within a few days he was
back in school ... with the biggest
" shiner" you ever saw! Despite
all this Virgilio was able to play
in the championship game and
received a letter for soccer.
Virgilio and I discussed the
school system in Brazil. He told
me that there are three types of
schools: all boys, all girls, and
coed. He complained that he had
attended an all boys school and
would have preferred going to a
school that had both boys and
girls. I can understand his
reasoning,, He explained to me
that if a student chooses to go to
college after high school, he must
attend three more years at a college
preparatory schooL If he
passes the three year course he is
admitted to college and continues
his education. Virgilio told me
that when he graduates from his
school he wants to attend college
to study engineering.
I was curious to know what he
thought of the United States despite
all the trouble that we have
had. He said that even though he
has not been able to travel around
too much he finds the people very
friendly and he likes the U. S.
very much. I asked him if he was
anxious to go home, and he r e plied,
" I want to go home, and I
don't want to go home. I have my
family and friends back in Brazil,
but I also have a family and many
friends here whom I love very
much. When the time comes, I
will find it very difficult to say
goodbye." It is also going to be
difficult for us, his friends, to say
goodbye. But, he is here until
June and I would like to wish him
the best of luck in his stay hero.
I would also like to take this
opportunity to wish Virgilio and
everybody a Happy Holiday.
