was commissioned an Army
second lieutenant upon graduation
from the Signal Officer
Candidate School at Ft. Gordon,
Georgia.
LL Byrne, a 1964 graduate of
Alfred G. Berner High School,
Massapequa, entered the Army
in September 1966 and was last
stationed at FortOrd, California.

Two soldiers from Farming-dale,
Privates Raymond J. Rhode
and John James Petrillo, completed
nine weeks of advanced infantry
training at Ft. Polk,
Louisiana. Their last week of
training was spent in guerrilla
warfare exercises.
During their guerrilla training,
they lived under simulated
Vietnam conditions for five days,
fighting off n* yht attacks and
conducting raids on " enemy"
villages. They were taught
methods of removing booby
traps, setting ambushes and
avoiding eneny ambushes.
Pvt. Rhode is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Joseph Rhode, 103
Yoakum Avenue.
Pvt. Petrillo is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Peter J. Petrillo, 521
Staples Street.

destroyer USS Gearing when she
recently completed a month- long

The cruise was designed in
order for the Gearing to observe
the nuclear powered Polaris submarine
USS Will Rogers as she
conducted post- commissioning
tests and training.
The Gearing is homeported at

in sea trials aboard the
light guided missile cruiser USS
Springfield following a six- month
overhaul in Boston.
Prior to the overhaul, the 610-
foot cruiser completed a 40-
month deployment to the Mediterranean
as flagship for Commander
Sixth Fleet.

a crewmember aboard the light
guided missile cruiser USS
Galveston when the ship arrived
at Naples, Italy for a three-day
visit.
The ship is currently serving
as a unit of the United States
Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean
and flagship for the Commander
of Cruiser- Destroyer Flotilla 10.
The Galveston is homeported
at San Diego, California.
