Question No, 7 concerning trips
taken by the Director:
The statement that the Director
has failed to submit written reports
of his trips is false. The
Director always submits a full
written itinerary and financial
report for each trip and reports
orally and in writing to the Board
concerning the matters discussed
at each conference. In deed such
a written report was submitted
at the July meeting attended by
all Board members. All these
reports are available for public
inspection.
Question No. 8 concerning access
to all records:
All Trustees may have access
to all records. The Board has so
ruled. The precise manner of
access is now before the Supreme
Court of Nassau County and all
parties will be bound by its
rulings.
Question No. 9 concerning the
Paris Review:
The decision of the Board concerning
the PARIS REVIEW is
fully documented in its June minutes.
The decision cites many
Supreme Court and New York
Court opinions which led to the
Board's conclusion. The minority
Trustee has not cited a single
case or other authority for his
interpretation of the law.
On the question of the commission
of a crime by displaying
the PARIS REVIEW, it might
be noted that the Trustee first
raising the obscenity issue now
appears to agree with the
majority. His first position, as
we understand it, was that the
PARIS REVIEW was so obviously
obscene as to justify a citizen
seizure to prevent a crime being
perpetrated. He has now retreated
to a present position
that merely claims that the spirit
of the law is violated ( whatever
that means).
Question No. 10 concerning the
purchase of films:
OUR MEN
BRING NEW
FIRE TO OLD
FURNACES.
Your furnace could be one of the
75% that waste fuel— and money.
Maybe this can be fixed in a jiffy
by adjustment— or a good cleaning.
Or perhaps your burner is creaking
like an old car ready for a
breakdown.
Our Mobil Heating Oil men can
give your burner a thorough check-
'-' P and make a diagnosis that
speaks your language.
They may suggest mechanical
improvements that will make your
burner work better at less cost.
In some cases, burner replacement
may be needed to bring new
fire to your furnace.
To help you find out, our men
will give you a tree Mobil Fuel-
Saver Analysis that could cut your
bills 38%.
Call us today. Our Mobil men are
all fired- up to help you.

All films are purchased on
their merits. Regarding the use
of free films it must be pointed
out that such films are not
spurned but frequently used. In
fact, in the past year a weekly
health series alone used at least
30 films, all free, from industrial
and educational sources. The
reason such free items do not
appear as a budgetary item ought
to be obvious. Purchased films
fill a different need and are permanent
acquisitions available always
for school, club and even
private home use.
Answering the charge concerning
purchase of films from a
distributor of Communist propaganda,
it should be said that
the allegation is unfounded. The
single Trustee now making this
charge handed * over at the last
Board meeting a paper which
attacked a man associated with
a company from which the Library
purchases films. The paper
did not discuss at all the merits
of the material distributed by the
company and, in fact, the minority
trustee stated that the board ought
not look into the merits of the
material in order to determine
his request that business relations
be served.
We believe that there are times
in American history when its
people determine a course to be
followed in the future. Such a
course was determined in recent
decades. We can no more go
back to an era of guilt by association
and innuendo or blacklisting
than we can go back to
the question of slavery or the
responsibility of the society to
see to the education of each of
its children.
Question No. 11 concerning per
capita costs for Library services:
The cost of $ 3.00 per capita
referred to appears in an outdated
Trustees handbook published
in 1954 and republished
in 1959 and represents an updating
of a figure originally used
in 1943. It has no relevance to
today's world. The Farmingdale
Library is in the lower range of
per capita expenditures of Nassau
County libraries.
Again, I thank you for this opportunity
to answer the questions
referred to above.

To the Editor,
On Thursday, August 3, I happened
to be present at the scene
of a fire caused by lightning at
118 Plitt Avenue.
I watched die South Farming-dale
Fire Department fight this
f i r e in a most efficient and
professional manner. Under the
able direction of Chief Kerrigan,
this difficult fire was quickly
confined and extenguished but
even more outstanding was the
manner in which die salvage
operation was performed.
Canvas was used to cover all
furniture; surplus water was
pumped out of die house and
holes in the roof were quickly
covered.
This extra consideration is
not found in every community
and should be a source of pride
and comfort to die residents of
Farmingdale. The South Farmingdale
Fire Department is to
be congratulated and I am proud
to call diem " brothers."
Lieut. Eugene P. Timmons,
New York City Fire Dept.
To the Editor,
Is it not strange that soon after
Mr. Carl Gorton attempts to perform
die duty he was elected to
perform he is suddenly villified
by the " phony" assault charge by
the Asst. Library Director? If
Mr. Gorton is not afraid to record
via his tape recorder every statement
he makes, why should Library
personnel be afraid to do
so? Is it because diey have something
to hide from the public?
If so, WHA T? What are they afraid
to say openly if die Library has
been operated with integrity?
Anyone who has even read
Newsday's " version" can see
diat she has admitted striking Mr.
Gorton witii his own cane, has admitted
grabbing the microphone
out of his hand. What would
happen in private employment
if an " employee" told the " employer"
that he could not look
in die files, and struck his employer
widi his own cane? Will
diis happen in Farmingdale? Not
on your life! 11 She will no
doubt be supported by the Library
Director and die Board
of Trustees in arrogant abuse
of power. Anyone who attended
the last Board meeting witnessed
diat arrogance.
You see, Mr. Gorton just isn't
supposed to question die Board's
spending 1,000 taxpayer dollars
for a " story book remedial reader"
for four students. At least
diat is the thinking of die Board,
I hope that every taxpayer in
Farmingdale will try to contact
Mr. Gorton to hear Mr. Gorton's

tape recording of that " PHONY"
assault accusation in order to
fully understand what is happening.
If they do I am sure they
will join me in calling for the
dismissal of the Asst. Library
Director, The Library Director,
and demanding the resignation
of die entire Board majority. Only
dien will we have an objectively
run Library for the benefit of
all instead of a small arrogant
" clique."
Very truly yours,
Edward H. Werner
To the Editor,
Mr, Orrin Dow appeared on the
Farmingdale Public Library
scene approximately 12 years
ago, when die Farmingdale Public
Library was located in a
small store in the north end
of Main Street. In 1967, we
now have a complete library
located in the Incorporated Village
of Farmingdale and an additional
library more centrally located
in the center of our school
district which are of great pride
to all the taxpayers who know
and use its services. In diis short
time during which our school district
has grown, widiout the exceptional
leadership of Mr. Dow,
I am quite sure diat this system
would not be what it is today.
I was present at die Library
Budget Hearing on Tuesday, August
8th, and it appeared to me
diat a certain member of die

Library Board tried to put Mr.
Dow on trial in front of die
rest of the audience in seeking
his own glorification. To my
way of thinking, to try to degrade
a man of Mr. Dow* s calibre
is pure ignorance on die part
of Mr. Gorton. The role that the
Director has played in the development
of this system is proof
in itself of his fine leadership and
business management.
In witnessing this library
meeting and being quite attentive
during die entire budget hearing,
I failed to hear Mr. Gorton, as
a Library Board member, sitting
on die Board, oppose any expenditure
in the current proposed
budget. Yet at the end of the
meeting, Mr. Gorton proclaimed
his disapproval of die current
library budget. I still do not know
what his opposition is to this
current budget. It is my opinion,
diat Mr. Gorton is using this
budget vote, die passage of which
will be beneficial to die taxpayers,
hoping for its defeat to
boost his own warped ego. If
Mr. Gorton truly seeked to serve
the Library of this district, I am
quite sure diat his knowledge in
his " own field," whatever diat
may be, could be put to better
use in cooperation withdie Board
of Trustees and die cooperation
with the Library Director who
has brought our library so far
from its early existance.
