For Vietnam Adopted Unit

of the Vietnam Assistance Committee
of Farmingdale, announced
that a second benefit dance,
will be held on Saturday Sep- :
tember 30 at the Bethpage Country
Club for the United States
Army Unit adopted in Vietnam
by the local group. Proceeds
of the event will be used to defray
the cost of postage incurred
in sending commodities
to the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry,
25th Infantry Division, nicknamed
the Manchus, as well as the purchase
of items requested by the
men — either for themselves
or for use in their pacification
and medical programs of aid to
the South Vietnamese.
Admission to the dance will
be $ 7.50 per couple, and a donation
of a wash cloth and a bar
of soap, items in demand by the
men. Mrs. William Joubert, MY
4- 6487, Ticket Chairman, will
arrange table facilities for those
interested.
In a letter received in early
August, from the unit, the committee
learned that the Manchus
have a new Commanding Officer
— Lt. Col. Stanley P. Converse,
who replaced Lt. Col. Robert A.
Hyatt. Said Col. Converse, « 1
want to assure you that as the
new commander I appreciate your
efforts and sincerely hope we
will continue to work together on
our mission here in Vietnam,,
Since the beginning of May we
have been plugging away at the
frustrating job of pacification.
In this type of work the items
you have sent are especially useful
and are very much appreciated.
The Battalion just came out
of the upper Ho Bo woods, called
Operation Farmingdale II;
where we again found numerous
Vietcong bunkers, booby traps,
tunnels, etc. We were successful
in capturing some material
and a few of the enemy, one of
whom we suspect of being a tax
collector. The monsoon is upon
us and the water level rises a
little more each day. The men
get pretty water logged but take
it in stride. These are fine
Knights To total New Officers
The Farmingdale Council,
Knights of Columbus will hold an
installation of officers on Saturday,
September 23 at 7: 00p. m.
at the Council Home, Morton St.
and Garity Place, Farmingdale.
The installation will be followed
by a reception including a
roast beef dinner and dancing
to live music. Families of members
are invited to the installation.

Historical Society President
Gregory Carman was installed
Monday night at the Beau Sejour
Restaurant in Bethpage as President
of the Farmingdale- Beth-page
Historical Society.

KC To Hold Open House
Farmingdale Council of
Knights of Columbus will hold
an Open House on Tuesday, September
19 at 8: 30 p. m. at the
Council Home, Morton St. and
Garity Place, Farmingdale.
Applicants accepted for membership
will receive the First
Degree on October 3.

Motorist Fatally Injured
John J. O'Donnell. 22. of 41
Sherbrooke Road, Lindenhurst,
was fatally injured on Fulton
Street, just west of Baldwin-
Street, Farmingdale on Wednesday
at 11: 23 p. m. when his car
collided with a vehicle driven by
Ruth Petry. The car then struck
a parked car owned by Eric
Lohwasser of 429 Staples Street
and continued before caroming
off a telephone pole and a tree
and shrubbery at the property
of Carl Dittmeier. The car was
found suspended off the ground
on a hedge about five feet from
the Dittmeier residence.
The State recently raised the
speed limit from 30 to 40 miles
per hour in this area. The new
speed limit signs were posted
to alert motorists of the speed
increase.
O'Donnell was pronounced dead
at Mid Island Hospital.

According to Mrs. Richard
Thompson, mailing chair man, the
committee has been busy over
the summer sending articles to
the Manchus. Since June have
been 200 tubes of toothpaste and
toothbrushes, 75 Klenli- Kits, 100
bars of soap, 500 bubble pipes
bubble liquid, four boxes of small
toys, 500 coloring books which
the committee had drawn up and
translated into Vietnamese,
crayons, and 15 auquans, pa jama-type
clothing of the South Vietnamese
children, made by the St.
Luke's Lutheran Church Women,
were mailed.

Ranh Bay AB, Vietnam.
' Airman Micolo, a supply inventory
specialist is a member of
the Pacific Air Forces. Before
his arrival in Southeast Asia, he
was assigned to Scott Air Force
Base, Illinois.
Airman Donald J. Deaton, son
of William T. Deaton of 45 Weiden
St., Farmingdale, has been
selected for technical training at
Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas
as a U. S. Air Force aircraft
maintenance specialist.
Airman Deaton is a 1967 graduate
of Farmingdale High School.

Arthur J. Intemann Jr., son
of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Intemann
Sr. of 85 Fallwood Parkway,
Farmingdale, has been commissioned
a second lieutenant in
the United States Air Force upon
graduation from Officer Training
School at Lackland Air Force
Base, Texas.
The lieutenant, a graduate of
Chaminade High School, Mineola,
received his B. S. degree in accounting
in 1967 from the University
of Dayton.
Civil Air Patrol members of
Nassau Composite Squadron V,
Farmingdale, joined 2,000 other
volunteers in the New York State
Civil Defense drill and Effectiveness
Evaluation, held
last weekend. Working in various
capacities, the cadets and
senior members were observed
by Civil Defense and Air Force
officials to determine the effectiveness
of the exercises.
Among the missions carried
out by Civil Air Patrol were
aerial photography, radiological
control, establishing communications,
transporting supplies
and reporting on traffic.
The problems faced by Civil
Air Patrol involved a simulated
situation with a submarine of
our own forces. While undergoing
operational testing in Long
Island Sound, the submarine suffered
a malfunction which caused
the inadvertent launch of four
armed nuclear missiles, all of
which impacted and detonated
within borders of New York State.
To meet the disaster, the Governor
proclaimed the State a
disaster area and called upon the
Civil Air Patrol to mobilize its
resources to determine the extent
of damage.
Local residents who participated
in the drill were Lt.
Colonel Howard L. Wirtz who
served as Sector Commander;
Major Irving Friedman, Mission
Commander; Captain
Thomas Coyle, Security Officer;
Senior Member Sherman Levitt,
Aircraft Maintenance Officer;
Lou Calobrise, Flight Line Officer
and Major Jay Schleich-korn,
Information Officer.
In addition to aerospace and
aviation activities, C. A. P. is
called upon to assist in search
and rescue missions as well as
Civil Defense drills.

Legion Adopts Hospital Project
During the past month, representatives
of the Talbonard A-merican
Legion Auxiliary made
two trips to the Kings Park State
Hospital. The group toured the
childrens' building with Supervisor
of Hospital Volunteer Services,
Gerard Cushing and after
the tour the Auxiliary decided on
a monthly birthday party for a
group of 36 boys.
The Auxiliary is now seeking
boys clothing for youngsters
between the ages of 8 and 15.
On Saturday, September 30,
the auxiliary will hold a Square
Dance at the Talbonard American
Legion Hall on Eastern Parkway
from 9 p. m. to 1 a. m.
Proceeds of the dance will be
used solely for the 36 boys at
Kings Park.

Labor Relations Course
Offered Evenings At College
A special workshop on labor
relations in public employment
will be held this fall at State
University's Agricultural and
Technical College in Farming-dale.
Focal point of the 13 - session
workshop will be various aspects
and provisions of the new
Taylor Law which replaces the
Condon- Wadlin act. The new law
will be analyzed and discussed
with reference to unit determination,
representation procedures,
scope and bargaining and
the settlement of impasses.
Those enrolled in the workshop
will also have the opportunity
to engage in practice
sessions of simulated bargaining
situations. Classes in The
Labor Relations In Public Employment
workshop will meet on
the Farmingdale campus Thursday
evenings from 7: 00 to 9: 00
p. m. starting October 19. Registration
closes September 30. Tuition
is $ 25.00.
Visiting professors from New
York University, Cornell University
School of Industrial and
Labor Relations, and the State
University of New York at Stony
Brook will conduct the program.
