His power, tiiat the dead saint.s would not be left behind, but with Him went sweeping through the clouds to Para¬ dise, And Ood the Fa(,her by voice and word, and .signs in lieaven and in earth acknowledged Him to be His Son. His onlv Son. the Lord of Glory, '1 the I'rince of Peace, the Giver of Life, and the King of Kings,
Hut in lace of all this, the clainis of Christ to the highest dignity were treated witli contempt awful con¬ tempt -for they placed the crown of thorns npon His hoad. Why did they do this? Thn reasons are at least these:
( 1 I The ordinary human appear¬ ance of Jesus, He did not seem to liave the dignity of a King about Hini. They expected llim to cmne in pomp and in great glory, attended by in¬ numerable angels, and recognized by tlie great ones of earth,
(2) The spiiituaiity of His King¬ dom, If it had been of earth only, and according to their conception of things it would have been very dif¬ ferent. On one occasion because of a retuarkable miracle that He had done they wished to make Him a king. But He withdrew from tliem, for He per¬ ceived that they did not understand Him, The ,s;ime dillicitlty arises to¬ dtiv. The spirituality of Christ and

IHis Kingdom Is still the cause of re- I jeetion. The natural man cannot bear to have his ideas aud opinions changed.
1 :i I The preconceived notions of men. accompanied by liardness of heart, and their stubborn wills make thetn to pour contempt upon the Sav¬ iour.
•Note the form tliat the contempt took - mockery and pain. The sol- dier.s considered it sport to mock the royalty of Jesus. iiut at tlie same time they were only rendering obed¬ ience to higiier autliorlty. and they had the example of ilie Jewish leaders and others wh^^ haiea Chrisc, who I sought to insult Him in every possible way. It mattered nol to them how mucii Jesus Buffered. The piercing of His temples with cruel tiiorn.s was nothing to them. The blood trickling down the Saviour's face did nol toucii the hearts of the mocker.s. When men lare excited by sinful passions there is no limil to their cruelty. And so I they made the Son of God suffer the 1 greatest indignities.
But contempt for the claim of Christ to the highest dignity was' overruled to the advantage of Christ,
( 1 ) For his sufferings revealed his f;iealneKs. A siualler person would have resented the treatment he receiv¬ ed, and would have railed against llieni. But we are told, that, "when He was reviled. He reviled not again; wlien l-le (iuftered He Uireatened not. ' Like tlie Himalayas towering up from tho earth until their peaks are lost amongst tiie clouds, and they' touch, as it were, the unseen world, so Jesus surrounded by His mockers, towered aliove lliem all, clothed in liie greal¬ ness of lli« Divine majesty, and tlie power of the unseen world,
(2» llis sufferings revealed His love. He could have called on heaven lo send him a legion of angels so that (-very mocKcr would bc swept into (ihiivion, Hear^these words: "Tliink- ost tlioii that I canno! now pray to .My Father, and He ,-^iiall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels."
(,"> I His sufferings reveal ills for¬ giving spirit. He iiad come to give Himself for sin. So ail through His ministry forgiveness tilled His heart, otherwise vengeance would have over-, taken thetn. '
Hut again, the greatness of Christ I revealed the valut; of his sufferings, I If they liad beeu the sullCiings of one ' w.lio was a mere man we could have ' admired him as a martyr, Bui when we reiiietuher that Jesus was tlie God- '¦ man. then we have the God-head and manhood in one, iiniteii to make an atonement foi' man's sin. Suffering that He might redeem um from the ' cause of tlic law. Then llis sufferings become of greater value to us. We realize thai they appeal to our soul's deepest need, for l^e has become otirj substitute.
In till' crown of thmiis coiii])osing the Siivioiir's crown w i- sec reliciitt-d:
I I ) The true characii-r iif .-^iii, ani the deadly curse, in tlie life and his- \ tory of men. Sin caused man to turn away from God. and live in open dis¬ obedience to Him. .Man deceived by sin sought to please himself, and ig- iiiire the authority of God, .And wiien .Icsiis Chri.st. who was God manifest in the ll(-sh. caiue into the world, mingled willi men and soiiglii to im¬ part eternal life to them; they de¬ nied llis auliiority, rejected His word, arrested llim asa traitor, treated Him as an impostor, and in derision cloth¬ ed him with a kingly garment, giving llim a crown of thorns, saying, "Hail, Kiiii; Ilf I he Jews,''
In illi this wc see tho hlindncsM that possesses man, and separates him from lliat wliicli is pure and holy. In this is seen the crowning point of it all; because tlu-y refused to helieve in Je«iis Clirist, This is the terrible Ihing today, .Men do not give Him their liearls, and do not allow Hitn to control their lives, Tliey treat Him as if he was like unto themselves, and not the Lord of Lords, and King of '- Glory, T!ie one who possessess all ' [lower in lieaven and eanh, and who will yet judge the (lUick and the dead, i (21 Agaiu in the crown of tiiorns i we see retlccted the triumphant con-I (luest and carrying away of Kin, They I iniglit treat Him with disdain if they; would, but He had come to do a cer¬ tain work, and tliat work He would do, ¦Phe powers of darkness might array themselves against him, and sinners crown llim with thorns, and give Him the gtili iind the wormwood to drink; hut He would press on; on to Calvary where sin's debt wa.s paid; whore tlie crown of shame became a crown of glory and of triumph; the powers of darkness con(|uered; ant^, sin carried away for ever.
By wearing a crown of mockery Christ added a glory to that which He wears continually. He bore the world's sin, and it broke His heart. But He broke down the powers of /larkness, and the bulwark*! of sin. He 'rent the- veil, that shut us out of the Holy Place, from top to bottom; and made a new way to heaven along whicii millions of previous souls have ! traveled. He conquered suffering,' «orrow, and death for us. .And now |
every branch and spike of fhe mock crown is a jewel enwrought with that of His divine majesty. Thus the very scorn of man Christ transforms into the sign of divine regal power. He wore the crown of thorns in order that He might bestow upon poor lost repentant sinners, "The Crown ot Life,"
Again, this crown of thorns was the symbol of Christ's work. Crowned Willi tliorn.s: Well, might we say: Oh the deep disgrace to those who did it. Vet, what so pathetically appropriate, what so beautifully significant, that I at the close and climax of such a life j as His, full of travail of soul and I agony of spirit, bitterness and re- . proach of men and devil^¦, and sin's j burden, there should be placed on I his head a crown such as should be I the expression and picture of it all, j Ves. Jesus Christ who will yet reign as King over all. found precious souls {lying on the"hreast"of prejudice and , passion, and at once with kingly cour- jage sought to transform them by His I lovp and grace, and lift them into the I "Beauty of the Lord." Ves. but let lis remember that it was liitter, heart- I breaking, thorny work. I I say this scene In Pilate Hall, and I the vision of our Lord and Saviour I crowned with thorns should produce. ! ( 1 I .-\ realization of the guilt and !<<in that brought him such pain: and 'made him travel snch a way,
(l'l H^pontance, Each one ought to say: My the grace of God I'll bc done with sin forever.
Ct) Grateful reverence. We should worship him. Our heart's affection should he all His, We should not have loved mere majesty and power how¬ ever gieat. hut Jesus Christ, God trianifecf in the flesh, we can love, "The love ,if Christ constrainetli tts,'' ( I I Service, Ves, I will serve Him, I'll go to Calvary with him, I will have fellowship with Him in His suf¬ ferings. If you do you will share His
resurrection power and glory, and you will be one of His precious jewels on that great day.
I turn to the Book of Revelation, Chap. Uc'.t. and read "And He said unto me. write, blessed are they which are called unto the marriage eiipper of the Lamb " Who are called? -\11 the saints and prophets of old. .-^bel. Abraham. Isaac, .lacob and Daniel, kings and prophets, apostles and mar¬ tyrs. Luther. Knox, Wesley, Living¬ stone, Washington, Lincoln, all the saints of the Old and the N'ew Testa¬ ment, all gathered together around t^e Christ to place upon bis liead the royal diadem, and hail Him King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.
.May we not all. here and now. crown Him in our liearls, and with united voices sing to His praise:
¦.\11 hall the |,ower of .lesus name. Let anticls iirostrate fall:
Hriiif forth the roval diadem. .\nd crown llim Lord of all "
