ALBANY, N. Y., July 23.—A sub¬ stantial Increase in the population of New York State during the past flve years will be shown py the prelimin¬ ary tabulation of the census enumer¬ ators' reports, according to a state¬ ment Iflsued several days ago by Secre¬ tary of State Francis M. Hugo. Mr. Hugo said tbat a conservative esti¬ mate places the advance in the vicin¬ ity of 1,135,000, or a total popula¬ tion of about 10,:;.>0,000 as compared with 9,113,614, Wlien tne federal cen¬ sus was taken in 1910. This total may be considerably larger, but by no means will the 1 1,000,000 mark be approached. Final offlciaf flgures cannot be expected, however, before September.
Tlie present es:imate ia ba.?ed in part on the increase shown by former census taking and by the personal (Ount of the si.\ ihousand enumera¬ tors who completied their fleld work la.sl month. The-e enumerators'- re¬ ports are hy no means final, for the slow process of verification is expect¬ ed to result in numerous changes. E.\- reptional care is being taken in checking the wo:k. It is expetted, however, that the ollicial flgures will show that the inerease from 1910 to HM,') has not bcci so marked as was thc case from I'.Kc, to I'JlO. One rea¬ son is the decrciise in immigration; another, the industrial decline ancl general htisfncKs depression during the last few year- The highest mark ill immigration was reached in 11107, but since then Here has been a (on¬ siderable drop i:i population. The war resulted in a general reduction in immigration and this, of course, ha.s had its effect on the increase in pop¬ ulation.
Returns will show nevertheless that there has Ivsen a good advance in the population in most of the cities, but whether these cities have grown to the dc riijient of the rural sections, or whether thc population In the cenlral and n^estern parts of the state has fallen, or numerous other interesting (jues ions, will not be known for some time yet. Despite the fact that this census is one of the most (liflicull ever taken in New Yoil% State, there wli be no delay in isa'.iing the oflicial publication which must be presented to the legislature for its consideration when it convenes next January. As is generally known, tlie principal reason for taking the cen¬ sus is for the redistricting of the state.
Straight Run of 47 Weeks.
The credit for t!ie longest run of tile season goes to "It Pays lo Ad¬ vertise," tlie farce by Roi Cooper .Megr.ie and Walter Hackett, which will enter upon its ITth woek at the Geo. .M. Cohan Theatre, Monday evening, July I'll. 'It Pays to Adver¬ tise." is well wortii tills record for it is so different from the numerous comedies produced during the year. Properly analyzed, "It Pays to Adver¬ tise," owes much of its charm to its statistical charactei. Business Is business and fads are facts, and the Megrue-Hackett play presents, for our enjoyment, conditions In the ev¬ ery-day work world with which we are familiar, but never before brought out in playforni.
The iast now presenting "It Pays to Advertise,''' at the Cohan, includes: .'\delc Holland, George Schaeffer, Elsa Fredericks, Harold Vermilyea, Ben Johnson, Frank All worth, Cecile Bre¬ ton, W. J. Brady, Vivian Rogers, Cliff Workman and Wm. K. Loane.
FEAR HOOKWORM FOR CHttDREN
Board of Health Asks Physicians to Look Out for it in Schools.
Physicians gencMlly throughout the greater city have been asked by Health Commissioner Goldwater tto be oh the lookout for hooteVorm vlc¬ lims among school children, ettpec- ially those who have come to the cuy from Southern climates.
The warning comes with the an¬ nouncement of the discovery and fa¬ vorable treatment of a case in Public School 35, Decatur slreet and Lewis avenue, Brooklyn. The victim, a boy of 14, continually fell asleep In his class room. The teacher called the case to tbe attention of Dr. Max. Lederer, tbe medical examiner. The boy was only In the third g^rade and when queetloned by the examiner always made indefinite replies.
The examiner interviewed the mother and learned the family had recently come to this city (rom Ja- maicsr West Indies. A subseauent physical examination disclosed the
presen4ie of tT^teal ova of tb« hook¬ worm. The boy waa under-developed, anemic and sleepy-looking. He was subjected to the approved treatment of thymol and epsom salts. Since he began the tr<ptment his mental slug¬ gishness has disappeared and he has gained physically.
