Tlie latest innovation in tho Long Island Railroad's persi.itpnt campaign to prevent accidents at grad*} cross¬ ings is thc Issuance of a series of pos¬ ters. In five colors, vividly portraying the manner in which automobilists, drivers of hor.se-drawn vehicles and pedestrians, continue to invite fatal and serious Injuries to themselves by attempting to beat trains across the tracks. The first two posters of the series have just been made public in the cars and stations of the Long Isl¬ and Railroad.
"Jail might stop thf-ni we can't " reads the Inscription on one of Ihem. An electric train and an automobile v\-ith five occupants, arn seen ap- proacliing a crossing that is jirotect- ed by a signiiot^* containing the warn¬ ing "Looii out for the cars." Thc powerful headlight of the train is shown illuminating the crossing and the .sign post. One of the occupants of the automobile is pointing his index finger at the train, and appar¬ ently urging the chaufTeyr to speed up and try to beat the train over the crossing. There is nothing imaginary about thifi picture. There liave been countless cases exactly like it in the past, Oflentinies the siieed-niad driver managed to satisfy liis foolish ambition. On the other hand, the records of the railroad also tell many a sad story of deatli and serious in¬ jury resulting from just such reckless driving.
The scene outlined on the second poster is one wliich may be seen re- tnactcd daily at Long Island grade crossings, "Tliey don't believe in sings" is the writing it contains. With the gates down and a train not many feet away from the crossing, six persons are observed niaking their way across the tracks. ,V young lady lias barely cleared the track on which the trtiin is running. Back of her is a barefooted youngster—a newsboy— walking directly in front of the train, and [olIovN'ing him are two well- dressed men and a lady with a child in her arms. Behind the mother and
child is seen another man, who fs lift¬ ing the apron of the lowered gate and going underneath it, indicating how the others had also wilfully vio¬ lated tiie city ordinance and disre¬ garded the railroad's rule and warn¬ ings. There is not an iota of exag¬ geration in the portrayal ot this scene, Kvery yeaf people get killed and inijured by doing the very thine illustrated by this poster. Only the other day a man was killed in just that way. He went underneath the lowered crossing gate at Beach street, .Morris Park. As he started over the tracks a train struck him and the in¬ jury proved faial.
'There are going to be accidents at grade eros«ings. " said J. .A, McCrea. general manager of thc Long Island Railroad today, "just as long as grade crossings exist and the public keeps on endangering their lives for the sake of saving a ,few seconds or min¬ utes, W'e realize fully that the only real «olutlon of the grad'' crossing problem is to bring about the aboli¬ tion of the crossings. That is what we are trying to do, but it cannot be done overnight. The work of grade ('h;.iit.'r"iinl^ l^w" crossing elimination has never stop¬ ped on the Long Island Hailroad In | the past fifteen years, .\'o railrnad in the I'nited Slates of equal size, and but few of the larger roads, have spent as much money as the I.ong Isl¬ and Hailroad for work of that char¬ acler. Several hundred crossings have been wiped out at a cost of be¬ tween $ I,'.,000,000 and $20,000,000, but the abolition of all grade cross¬ ings is still some years off,
"While it is next to impossitiie to prevent every grade crossing accident, we feel, nevertheless, that with the hearty co-operation of the public In heeding the various warnings whicli have been displayed prominently at all grade crossings anil elsewhere and by giving consideration to other means adopted to safeguard residents and pleasure-seekers, the large num¬ ber of accidents whicii occur annually at I..ong Island grade crossings can he minimized. Last year our campaign of education resulted in a marked re¬ duction in iiuiuber of accidents. We again appeal to tlie puhlic to lielp us mako this year's campaign an even greater success."

PROBATIOLSVSTEM
EMMINENT JURIST ISSUES PAM¬ PHLET ON THE VALUE OF THE PROBATION SYSTEM TO RURAL AND VRBAN COMMUNITIES,
Hon, John F. Hylan, Counly Jiulgc of i'Cings ("ounly, sends us a copy of his report on "The Probation Sys¬ tem and Its Valuo to Society," As Judge Hylan is well known for his work along this line, tho report is well worth reading by all who have the welfare of the coniniunify at heart, and that should mean every one of us. Judge Hylan says in his letter:
"Since 1 have had the honor to represent the people of Kings ('ounty in a judicial capacity I have found that many young men liavo drifted away from the influence of home and church and, as a result have been led into the commission of crime, I have endeavored to ai dtlie young men and v\omen who have committed tlieir 'first offense' against the law and society.
"I believe that the comniunity is benefited just as thoroughly if the first mistake Is overlooked, the first term iu prison avoided, and the in¬ discreet and misguided young man given an opportunity to become a good and useful citizen, as vvlien the vicious and habitual criminal is sen¬ tenced for ^lie longest term the law provides,
"Aiding tlie boy not alone helps him, but it saves tho father, mother and other menibers of the family from heartaches and humiliation,"
Setting aside all other considera¬ tions, Judge Hylan's probation work is constructive in the highest and best sense, and that alone sho'.:ld commend it. Any plan that will take young persons just starting in a ca¬ reer of crime, turn them about and start them on fhe right track, thus at once making them useful and remov¬ ing a menace to organized society should be upheld. .\ot only is it "tempering justice with mercy," which is commendable in itself In the care of the young criminal, but the doctrine, in its first working out, is one of sourfd common sense as well. Copies of the report may be secured by addressing Judge Hylan at the Kings County Court.
