FREEPORT MAN ON CO. DEFENSE BOARD
Blank mystery suriounds the dis- appearence from her home of .MTSis Gladys B. Austin, the beautiful dau¬ ghter of .Mr. and Mrs. WJIllani B. Aus¬ tin, of Harrl»<m avenue, Baldwin. She dropped out of digbt ou Wednesday April 4th, when she bid 'farewell to her mother and staited. presumably for the Freeiwrt Club where ahe was to rehearse for the Spring Frolic held laat week.
There was nothing in her depaiture that lent a suspicious ihoughlHo ber mother. She was usually calm and did not exhibU the slightest mcuial disturbance. In Jact she was unus¬ ually alive and attentive that day. She aUted tliat she expected to be home In time for supper, but she failed to return. Nor bas she been seen or heard from since, from all reports.
Her father is as much mystihed in Glady's disappearance aa are ber close girl friends. From what can be learn¬ ed she look no one into her confidence about her Intended dlBappearan<e, aud as a result every elTort to locate a clue as to her whereabouts has failed.
Her family Incline to the belief that abe has entered .some nurses' training school. She ba.^ often referred to a nurses' life as an ideal one and this
idea manifested it«'lf on the eveuing - p christofd, of Minet.la; Frank L. before she lelt. She had read an ac- ! count of a nurses' graduation exer¬ cises iu a newspaper -and commented on It to hor parents.
.Mr. Austin in a slalement to the press declared that he had no known desire ou his daughter's part thai site liked a niiises' life for hor future. There would have l)e<Mi no stiong par- enUl objection lo it hud they known. He believes Ihat she felt there would have been an objection and for that reason left withwit seeking it.
This, of course is but a theory. It takes Its place ahmg side aeveral other
theories which Mr. Austin baa bunted .,.,.„,.,

Austin met a youth who lives in Bos ton and several leters have been ex¬ changed between them. Indeed the friendship between the couple was so pronounced that he came on here to see Misa .\uslln, la.«!t month. An important change has been made in the local police department, John Dunbar who has served as captain and again as patrolman at different times In his long police career has once more been promoted to the superior rank. He was raised to the captaincy on .Monday by Chief James Hanse. Carl Darenberg wbo bas been captain for the last two years was relagated lo the rank of patrolman.
The move in making Dunbar capt. was expected. I'nder the former re¬ gime of Capt. Hanse as village presi¬ dent and chief of police Dunbar ser¬ ved in that capacity. The police de¬ partmenl then was in excellent condi¬ tion and worked like a clock. The pro¬ motion of Capt. Dunbar was not done as a slap at his predecessor. In truth -Mr. Darenberg has been complimented for his work while commander in charge of the men under him.
The promotion of .Mr. Dunbar comes with the usual change of adminislra¬ tion, but It is a popular niove and has won much praise. As a county detec¬ tive Capt. Dunliar showed real merit in the police line. He is ostensibly a policeman and is rated in the county as a capable detective. He is a hard worker and is faithful In the perfor¬ mance of his duty. He is Rood under orders and with the uhiJiquitous Capt Hauae as a mentor il is safe to say that Freeport will be rid of ihe petty thieves and housebreakers who have sidled into this village ai odd times and have stolen some valuable pro¬ perty.
Alvin A. Sealy, who developed much of F'reeport in the Bayview section is laudatory of (^apt. Hanse as a chief of the local department and he refers to the freedom of the village from undesirables under his previous term. With Capt. Hanse, Capt. Dunbar and their men working in unison along lines of responsible police work it is safe lo expect that Freeport will bave a stircreasc of worry over the dread¬ ed visil from the ni^ht time thief.
If^ the plan fails and disorder and nui.sances occur the Post will not hes¬ itate in printing them and will call attention lo them, but The Post be¬ lieves that the police problem Is near a solution, ^^'e will leave tlie rest to Chief ll.anse and his iflen, l)eli<'viiig

.An interesting wedding tbat united two athletes of note m Rockville Ctn- ire, Wednesday evening, was that of .Miss Hattie Almira Cross, the dau¬ ghter of .Mr. and .Mrs. John W. She recently took pari in Haztd Kirke. given under the uu:ipiccs of the iMatik and Wig Club and scored a hii.
Her parents scout the .idea that she might liaxe gone on the stage, as llior- oiigh aa lliey do the feeling that sho has entangled herself in an altair of the heart. The chief cause of woiiy is not ao much in the young woman's disappearance as she is capable of taking care ot herself, a-s it is in tbo fear that she might have met witb foul play, while not expecting to meet with tt. The girl's beauty might have been an allusement tbat could have lead to her kidnapping.
As she has nothing lo fear and has had no illnesses or menial troubles to distress her, her parents do not be¬ lieve that sive has destroyed herself. They cling to the belief that she haa tired of the confining influences of aurburban life and baa gone oft to shift for herself as a nurse. The family haa employed police asalstance and the hospltala will be visiled.
