The Wjr(?est haul of Spanish mack- ere. for the season, and what is said to be a record-breaker in many years, was made on Sun(lay off Point Look¬ out by Freeport fishermen.
The total brouifht in by the boat.^ was 30,000 pounds, or 1.') tons, ac¬ cording to reports, and required 180 barrels for shipment to market. Al¬ lowing the fiishermen 15 cents a pound for their catch, a fair market price under present conditions, the days' return would be $4,500, a tidy surr.
The mackerel were of fine size and excellent quality. They formed what some of the veteran baynien claim to l>e the larftest schbo.s ever seen in local waters.
At a npecial meetinf^ of the Ro«k- ville Centre Villaire Board of Trustees on Monriay evening. Will F. Phil¬ lips, who retired as a trustee after the election last March, was appointed captain of police at a salary of $1,500 a year. He assumed his duties on Tuesday.
Actinjr Captain John Kircher, who had been in charge of the force since Captiain George O'Neii resigned on May 1, has resumed duty as a patrol¬ man.
Captain Phillips is a yot^ng man. His father was head of the Albany Police and met his death accidently in that city.
From fhe AmityviUe Sun. Garden owners in Greene avenue and Union avenue report that the section is fatrly over-run with gray .squirrels.' Although the.se litt.e ani¬ mals are destructive to a fault, they are protected by law. Even in the open season, from November 1 tn December 31, .squirrels cannot he shot within an incorporated village.

Suffolk Official Wires McAdoo Against L. I. Ticket Move.
Surrogate Selah B. Strong, of Suf¬ folk County, has sent a teiCgram to William G. McAdoo, secretary of the treasury and director general of rail¬ roads, protesting against the "calling in" of all mileage books and family trip tickets sold prior to June 10, 1918.
By placing its order into efTect Sur¬ rogate Strong contends the Long Isl¬ and Railroad is violating a clause of a special charter it received from the state of New York, which specifically states that the state expressly retains the right to regulate the fares.
Judge Strong requests Secrertary McAdoo to instruct the officials of the Long Island Railroad to live "up to the contract and restore the books and tickets at th^ old rates.

An Editorial from the Albany Times-Union of June 4,1918.
[The TImesUnlon Io owned and edited by Hon. Martin H. Glynn, former Governor of New York, chosen by President Wilson to renominate Mr. Wilson for President In the Democratic Na¬ tional Convention of 1912.]
THE conspiracy against the Hearst publications and Mr. Hearst personally reflects no credit on sjiy of the parties concerned in it. There is no patriot¬ ism, no loyalty to the Qovemment, no fidelity to principle or even a semblance of deceilcy in such an onslaught.
The same elements that are fighting Mr. Hearst in thia underhand manner have been fighting him ever since he entered ths field to help wring justice from big busi¬ ness. Some papers that are exploiting the matter are merely house organs of bijf business, and every man who is taking part in the flglit on Hearst is either one who is in the employ of the agents of corporate greed or is an innocent and misguided victim of such. Doubtless many Cfood men have succumbed to the wiles and persuasive¬ ness of the anti-Hearst propagandist, but they do not understand the niotive behind the eflfort. Patriotism haa nothing to do with it. Pro-German iw pro-Ally cuts no figure whatever. Iharc thin veils are used to cover the hideousness of «^ a ccn3pirac7 to pnnish Mr. Hearst for the flght of years
he has been making for the people. 'EVEHY COERUPTINO INTEREST FIGHTING,"
Every corrupting element that has hung about the lobbies of Washington and Albany is now fighting Hearst, as they have fought him for years.
Every agent of big and corrupt business is fighting him.
Every highly respectable schemer that robbed the stockholders of the railroads up to the day the Govern¬ ment took ccKtrol' is in this fight against him.
Every railroad manager and director who has robbed his employes to pay out in dividends the money that shorld have gone to the men in better wages is in this fight ag-ain.^t Hearst, for they regard him as their enemy. Certain papers leading the fight are the house organs cf coiTupt big business and war profiteers, and the tools tjioy are using are the same men who have drawn fat re- tair.ers from hip, busine"!S for fchowing its members how far they could go in the v.ork of plundering the public r.nc! still keep out of jail.
Every one of these enemies of the people is arrayed j'.n-'" st Iluarst and ie squealing about his own loyalty and j^a'ricl{,cni. I.n the cas? of ncai-ly every one of them, patri- otl:'n ?^5rciy means profit,-fifa they rcj^ard politics only as it oiTfirn oppcrti;mty for pl\in;iorin?; tlie people. "iClI/ICAL FLUNDEEEPS .^G.MNST HIM." ' H'iirst has b:.cn for ths people, and political plunder¬ ers are against him.
Hoprst i.s for Government o'/vnicrship of public utilities, end tho^e who have piled up fortunes financing them un¬ der private ownership are against him.
Hearst has stood for organi.^ed labor for years and has fought its battles, and all the big moneyed men who believe that capital should organize in every possible way but labor should not be permitted to organize at all are fighting him and parading their patriotism as an argument. It is true that Mr. Hearst did not want this country to go into the war if it could keep out and protect its honor and interest. There are many millions of men who felt as Mr. Hearst felt before our entrance into the strvigglo. But these people are standing loyally, firmly and patriot¬ ically with the President, while many of tbe early bowl«n for war lost their enthusiasm as loon as we got into the struggle.
In this flght oo Hearst the cry of patriotism made by the howlen is only a refuge for profiteers. It it a fl|^t on the people rather than ou Heiurst. IT'S THE 8AMX OLD nOHT THAT HAB QONE Oil POE YSAMB AND^WILL OO ON AB LONG A8 THS P088IBILITT OP PUBLIO PLUNDU BXnrS AHD MSN AU POUMD TO ITAMD IN THE WAT Of IU PLOXD«UBS.
