PROIV.lSE TO REDUCE THE
COST OF LIVINQ
NOT KEPT,
Our opponents promised to re¬ duce tbe cost of bring. This tbey bare failed to do. But tbey did reduce tbe opportunities of making a living. Let us not for¬ get tbe conditlonstbat existed in this country under the new tariff prior to the outbreak of tbe war. Production bad decreased, busi¬ ness was languishing, new enter¬ prises were not undertaken, in¬ stead of expansion there was curtailment and our streets were filled with the unemployed. What ground Is there for expecting better conditions when the un¬ healthy stimulus of tbe war bas spent Its force and our industries and worklngmen are exi>osed to the competition of an energized Europe?
It Is plain tbat we must bare protective upbuilding, policies.— Mr. Hogher' Speech of Accept¬ ance.

Hughes Points the Way
The speech of tbe Uepublican candi¬ date for president wms a keynote speech Indeed. Not (uie i)ersou In the great audience at tlie Caruef^le hall meeting was In doubt for oue moment as to Just what lie luxKint by every¬ thing be said.
His address was cuiprebenslve, logi¬ cal, clear and all sutlicleiit for tbe oc¬ casion. There can be no dispute as to this. Plainly Mr. Ilueiics Is a mun who "knows what be wants when he wants l%" and It Is the opinion of po¬ litical authorities who heard him and wbo bave sln.ce read his remarks tbat | be knows also bow to i^et It.
It was Incumbent ujwn the Republi¬ can candidate to confine the scope of his remarks to the limitations of tbe occasion, but his crushing analysis of i the shortcomings of the present ad- i ministration of the government is j merely an earnest of what tbe tone and the contents of his speeches will ; be when be gets on the stump.
At Carnegie ball Mr, Hughes ad- ! verted to every general question that I Is apt to be a serious Issue in the cam- ; riUSQ Ul^ in language that will be j absofut«y clear to ev«y maB or wo-j man able to read be stated hia opin¬ ions, bis conrlctlons and his purposes. On the stump be will argue those points in detail. As an orator be is eloquen*, his personality attractive, nnd bis marshaling of tacts so co¬ hesive that he holds bis audience to the end. He makes It easy for them to follow bim. and bla points are not lost.
There was nothing equivocal, noth¬ ing apologetic in the Republican can- illdate's speech of acceptance. He (ailed a spade a spade, and tbe unani¬ mous opinion of those who beard bkn was that he shot to the center and rang tbe bell. The Republican cam¬ paign la now open, and those who wUl speak and write and work for tbe suc¬ cess of the Republican ticket can wish for no more adequate campaign docn- ment, no more satisfactory statement of issues than are found In tbe candi¬ date's salutatory^'
DUTY OF THE ADMINI8TRA-
TION TO STOP PLOTS AND
CONSPIRACIES.
We denounce nil plots and consplra<'le8 lu the Interest of any fi^reljin nation. Utterly In¬ tolerable Is tbe u.se of our soil for alien Intrigues. Every Amer¬ ican mu.st unreservedly con¬ demn them and support every effort for their suppression. But here also prompt, vlgorou.s and adequate measures on the part of the administration were need¬ ed. There should bave been no hesitation, no notion that.lt was wise and politic to delay. Such uu abuse of our territory de¬ manded Immediate and thor¬ oughgoing action. As soon as tbe administration bad notice of plots and conspiracies it was its dMty to stop them. It was not lacking in resources. Its re¬ sponsibility for their continu¬ ance cannot be escaped by the condemnation of others.—From ^r^ ^ughes' Speech of Accept- auce.
