The lown board of any town containing a village or ham¬ let In which there la not a pracUclng phy- siuiao raaidlng within its buundiirles or willuxi a rodiua of eight mllea thereof, may, at a special meeting called for that purpoae, eetabliah the ofUce ot town phy¬ sician and fix the salary of such physi¬ cian at nut more thaa one thouaand dol¬ lars per annum, and appoint to the office so created a duly liualitied physician upon oondiUon Uiat ho shall reside in aucb vil¬ lage or hamlet. The compensation ot such town physlciOB shall be a town charge and the aum necessao' to pay tbe same shall be levied, collected and paid at tha Ume and in tho manner that other charges against the town are levied, collected and paid.
