JACK BEEE INJURFD.
Used Good Judgment at the Rieht Time.
On Sunday afternoon, an automo¬ bile collision occurred on Nassau road near Whitehouse avenue, which might have had serious and prohably fatal rcHultH but for the quick Judgment of one of the drivers.
Mr. W. J. Schumacher, an Importer of New York, living at 17 Pearsall street, P'reeport, with his wife, occu¬ pied their new Dodge tnachlne, and waa proceeding north on the main road. .\ hor.se and wagon was ahead of them, and the chauffeur turned to pas« it, when he noticed an auto coming south. Thinking to let this machine pa.ss Ix'tween him and the wagon, he swung clear over to tlie left of the road.
Thi.s movement surprised tlie driver of the oncoming Kord. who was Jack Bier, and in trying lo get out of the way, turned his machine up on tlie .sidewalk, barely missing a headon hump with a huge telegraph pole. Be¬ fore he could pass safely, the Dodge machine, it is reported, struck him on the rear wheel and, it is alleged, slammed his auto with considerable force against the fence. The fence was wrecked and tlie "flivver" pretty badly mashed up, while the Dodge

only had a tire torn off and the front avle bent, but both machinea had to he towed to the repair shop.
^htio nre-iimenta pro and con were being freely indulged In, smoke was seen coming from Mr. Schumacher's auto and the crowd which had gath¬ ered hastily scampered to a safe dis¬ tance for fear of an explosion. A short- circuit wire cau.sed the flre, which was soon put out.
Jack Bier was caught in the debris of his machine and received some cuts and bruises, but was not seriously hurt.
If Jack had not turned up on the sidewalk he would have hit the Dodge Biachine amidships, and probably in¬ jured Its occupants seriously.
Motorcycle Accident,
On Friday afternoon ot la.st week, two well known residents of Roose¬ velt were mixed up In a collision which resulted in serious injuries to both. Leonard Schlegle of Charlee street was coming south on Nassau load on his motorcycle. Ahead ot him waa Mr. George Wertz of the Park View Hotel, on a bicycle.
As the latter neared Clinton ave¬ nue he turned to his left to go out that atreet. Just at this time Leon¬ ard had turned to his left to pass .Mr. Wertz, and the two niacliines came together with considerable force, noth men were thrown to the ground with a sudden jolt. Mr. Kertz receiv¬ ed a had scalp wound, bruised back and olher injuries, while Leonard re¬ ceived a nasty cut over the eye and other painful bruises. They wore both removed to their homes and at¬ tended to by their physicians. While it will take some time for them to recover from their injuries, no serious results are looked for. The two wheels were considerably damaged.
