PROFIT IN FEEDING ROUGHAGE TO GAHLE
Renewed interest is being tnkeu In the marketing of rough feed through feeding It to cattle, says tbe Kansas Farmer. Ordinarily the method of fig¬ uring proflta on such operations is to charge tbe cattle market prices for the feeds consumed, and wbut Is left above cost of thla feed nnU the labor Involved Is regarde<l ns profit. It is difllciilt to figure In this manner and secure the real profits where rough fee<ls only are Involved. Quite often this rough feed has no marliet whatever away from the farm. Even where the feeds con- sunuHl by cattle barely return actual market prices at the nearest station it I.s possible to figure a protit from tho standixjlnt of increased fertility on the farm.

Head of the Flock Should Not Ba Al¬ lowed to Run With Ewes.
lOvery man with ii bunch of bred ewes on his bauds knows It is bud policy to allow the ram to run with them through the winter, says tbo Na¬ tional Stockman. He crowds tbem ut the feed trough, worries thein at other times and hy using his superior strength in l)unting and iJUshing may ciuiso costly abortions. It Is no iJlace for him, but still too often he is found tliere because it Is "too much liother" to keep hlni by himself. .Nor shuiild be run with the I'atteuiug lambs to hog the feed and keep tliem from making the best of gains. On some farms be will lie fonnd with the cattle, running to tile strawstack. But here, besides lining his lleece with chaff and otlier tilth, hi' Is likely to be iiiulerfed iiuleds special provision is made lor hini.
Wo can't ex[)ect our sole investment ill service fee for use of a ram to be his cost price. Iio will not ciire for himself, and if he Is not worthy of bis hire better .send blm to the butcher and se<ure one that Is IJcnerally n place for him can be found close to the other sheep, where be will not be loiieHome and where he can be fed handily. I'lrhaiw as gojd a place as any will be an open leanto iigainst tho regular sheep shelter that atfords a dry place for him overhead. Ills "lot'' may well he an acre or ten acres ttiat ii'ay happen to ail.loin tho sheep yards. Here be can koep dry—the most essen¬ tial thing—and here lie can got plenty of exercise and be j-aslly fetl as the other sheep are. .Vnd pleiise do uot forget a pall of fresh water every day, and some salt when the ewes get theirs. It won't pay to neglect the ram.
