Long time ago, in tbe deep woods beside the river wblcb ran south, a panther lived, and at night be would talk to his brothers and sisters in a voice which sounded like tbe cries of a woman in pain. Sometimes a Utile Indian boy would wake to hear tbe voice of the panther, and be would sit up In tbe dark and grip tbe band of bis mother.
"Huah—go to sleep I" tbe mother would say. "It is only tbe Wild Boy whipping the panther. Tomorrow your grandfather will tell you the story."
And always the next morning, as soon as tbe .little boy was wide awake, he would ask tbe old man to tell the story of tho Wild Boy's figbt with the pi.nther. And while the new flre was sending bluo smoke up above the cook¬ ing pot, tbo old man would say:
"Once tho Wild Boy got tired of liv¬ ing in tbo trops witb the bees and tho birds, and bo wanted to get married. Iiut flrst he had a work to Uo, and bo asked the bear to help bim. The bear would not help him unless he would bo the boar's brother; and uftfT tbat tho Wild Hoy stayed in the woods and did not want to got married.
"He was tlie brother of tbe bear, and he no longer cared to live in tbe trees, but ran about in the meadows and down by the river, where the flsh leaped lu tbe water.
"First, tho bees came and asked the Wild Boy to come back to them in the tree-tops, but tho Wild Boy only laughed. Then the birds took turns going to visit him and asking blm to come back to the tree-tops. And to every bird who came to bim, tbe Wild- Boy said:
" 'I am brother of tbo bear now, and I do not care to go back to tbe tree-tops!' And he said nearly the same words to the raccoon and squir¬ rel and the 'possum.
"When they had all failed to get the Wild Boy back to the trees, the sleek panther, who also spent most ot his

time In tbe trees, called all tbe tree dwellers in council. And wben they had come and were quiet, tbe panther got up on tbe highest limb and said:
" 'You bave all failed to bring back tbe Wild Boy, who was our messenger to the animals and tbe people of the level ground. Now, if the weaver bird will make a strong cord for me I will go and bring the Wild Boy.' So tbe weaver bird began right away to do what the panther had said.
"The panther ran off, as soon as it was.,dark. on the next night, and he carried tbe cord over his shoulder. He came to the tree which was big around and hollow; and inside tbo bear and his brother the Wild Boy were sleep¬ ing. For a while the panther sat and studied about bow be could get the Wild Boy to wake up without disturb¬ ing tbe bear.
"Finally, be decided tbat be would go down to the river and cry like a woman in pain. And, sure enough, when tho Wild Boy heard the cry, be pot up and ran to the edge of tbo wa¬ ter; and as he ran he thought of the beautiful young woman who once said that she would marry him.
"But there was no woman down by the river—only the panther was there, holding one hand behind bis back.
" 'What are you doing here, and what bave you got in your hand?' the Wild Boy asked. And the panther said that he had come to get the Wild Boy.
"But wben tbe panther sprang to put the cord about tbe Wild Boy's body and lead him back to the tree-tops the Wtld Boy rubbed his bands on bis cheeks and then put tbem over tbe panther's nose.
"Now, when the Wild Boy had be¬ come tbe brother of the bear, the bear had passed his tongue over the cheeks of tbo Wild Boy; and when the panther smelled the Wild Boy's bands, it was as If tbe bear himself was standing in front of him. He was afraid then, and he ran away to the tree tops. But from that day to this the panther has not forgotten how to make bis cry sound like the cry of a woman in pain."

Too Polite. It Is well to be thoughtful of other people's feelings, tftt it pays to be discreet m all things. This point is well illustrated by an amusing inci¬ dent culled from Short Stories.
At a recent church dedication, the preacher, who was a stranger, fol¬ lowed up his serrQon by an earnest ap¬ peal for the balance of the money needed to pay for the building.
The collectors went around, and promises came in. As the subscrip¬ tions were one after another read, a I collector announced, "The five Black j children, one dollar." The courteous preacher quickly amended the state¬ ment by announcing, "Five little col¬ ored people one dollar."
Amid an outburst of merriment, the collector hastily explained that the donors were white children by the name of Black.

THE STORY OF A RUG
"I was an old worn out carpet. I was of ru) use to any ono. But I took courage and began my search for the Fountain of Youth. I set forth for Freeport, Long Island, and there I found the object of my long search.
I had supposed that my colors were entirely lost but I found they were simply obscured. In the process of rejuvenating they were restored In all their former beauty and brilliancy, reapp(^arinp In rich, Oriental effects that were cliarming. How was it done?..
First they put me Into a cleaning machine where all dirt nnd lacks were removed (before I could receive my next treatment). They next ran nie through a power machine where I was cut into strips- In the next machine I was raveled and frayed. To be made new, it was essential that I be ra¬ veled and frayed, twisted and made into chenille. This twisting was done on a machine, unique in construction, and of entirely original conception.
At last I was ready for the weave room, and there I was gratified to see that I was to be woven by the old fashioned hand loom. Hero the opera¬ tor took me piece by piece and, with loving care, combined the pieces to produce the most harmonious effects possible. After being trimmed and fringed I was again put into the cleaning wheel where the last vestige of dust was removed. Then on to the clipping bench where I was trimmed down to an even surface. Then to the tumbler for a final polish and I was young again, ready and willing to give twenty years more of good service l)ack in the home I had learned to love.
Hoping that you will profit by my experience as I liave told it, I am your (to be down trodden) servant. I
A "KVC."
