Ilhat wellknowu, and effluieut poll lieo agrkvltuiist, Stephen D, Pettit, point with the husbandman's pride to the fruitful acres adjoining the coua^ ty jail, where mush melons are ripen¬ ing alongside of the green corn and where tomatoes are red and luscious on the vine. The Mineola farm is like¬ ly to produce a harvest which will make the pail table groam even lend¬ er than the priaonors who have ibeen forced to till the soil. The Mineola Fair Association should set apart space for a grand ePltit exhibit, and a prize or two should be awarded to encourage the agricultural Industiry so ably fathered by the sheriff.

A NEW RIVER
IiUHldfnts of lonK Uland seem peeullarly fortunate iln discovering new ilvtirs. The one ho praphlcally described in the poem below can hard¬ ly be called a "ilver," a^- the poem it self admits. Still It has been so called for lo, those many, years.
THE RIVER OF DOUBT, (sometimes oalled "East.")
"Now to the Sound and now to the Uee,
I em driven by cveiy restless tide, Away to the North I bur: ing flee.
Then the greai sea calls-calls unto me Aud I turn and seek in the depths to bide.
But ever my wafers weie bitter and salt,
I never sought the cold, stern sea, I lack the alrensth oi' the hills, and bait
Wlien I meet tbe &ieal grims sea's assault, And I turn with the wild fierce tide and flee.
Like *corpian heed in chain of flne, . -^^-
hi in portant wiath I,coil and bide, 1 beal the shane wilt mail desine.
Ruin I work aid witb death sousplne. Yet I heed the call cf tbe soa aod the tide,
Thene's a tale bf my birth, it is not my own.
From the North a laighty glazier came. It sank la tho tea—unkelled—unknown— Ahd 1 am a river? Only a name."
FRAGMENTS
Fine poets must have tbe ability to condense their thought* aad tell much in few words. This seems oue of he cssenlais ot poery. A few stanzas are herewith felecied. If you wish to know more of the poems from which these fragments were selected, write the poetry editor of Tbe Nassau Post.

I'loar Ihe tough greenswan with tbe spa4«; Wide let its hollow bed be made;
There gently lay the roots, and there' ~ Sift the dark mould with kindly cane,'*^^
And press il o'ei them tenderly. As lound the sleeping infants feet We softly fold the eradle-sheel— So wo plant tho apple tree.

Lithe and long as the serpent traili,
Springing aud clinging from tree te tree, Darting upward and down again,
Wilh a twist and a twirl that are strange te see; Never took serpent a deadlier hold.
Never tke conger a wilder spring. Strangling the oak with the boas fold.
Spanning the beech with the corridor's wing.
