of Contention
James Long, of Oyater aDy, who represented Nassau County In ttio State Senate several /ears ago Is : e- Ing sud by Snator Tt omas H. O'Keef'- to collect a Judgment of ?685.29 which he ol)talned against the former state senator some time ago.
I^ng, who has been appointed S'c- retary to the Legislative Investigai- Ing Commission at a salary of ?4.0i"' a year, filed a coluntary petition Ji. banlcruptcy after Senator O'Keeff oo tallied a Judguieut against hiia. Tiie ex-Senator places his assets at $151, and bis liabilities at |1,496.2;{.
In the bankruptcy proceedings whKli are now being heard in Long Island City, Senator O'Keefe's attorney, Mor rIs Kamber, of Manhattan, is makin;,' ftn effort to flnd property valued a^ 30,000 to which he claims Long ad. mltted ownership only a short timt ago.
This porperty has been transferred and Senator O'Keofe sets up the claim that Long did not act in good faitli when he made the transfer. Then thousand dollars of the property, foi- merly owned by Ixmg, is now in th<' name of Mrs. Mary B. Wrigiit, who.s<' cottage at Oyster Bay, was occupu'il by William Loeb, jr., for several sum niers, while he w is in Oyster Bay, a' secretary to i'resident Roosevelt.
Four mn—William H. oJnes, .lolin S. Burke, B. F. McCauley and Bein.inl H. Powers—have been subpoenand tJ testify In regard to Long's flnanca! transactions at the next hearing be¬ fore Refewe Charles A. Tipling in Long Island City, on July 14.
It appears that these four men en¬ dorsed a note for $1,500 which Loi:; owed to the North Shore Bank at (Jy- ster Bay. Officials of the Bank lia\i testified that $1,350 of this amount vat paid on May 29, 1914, six weeks afler Long had declared himself a baiili- rupt.
We propose to find out whether Long paid this sum with his own fund.

Cozsens was kindly. He received the stranger, placed him in a cell, turned the key and bade bim good night. There was no round from him until he asked for water shortly aft-ir ten o'clock and engaged the officer in a brief conversation.
The story the stranger told ran..? with a note of sincerity and earhest- nes.s. He quoted from the "Vision o' .Sir l.aunfal" and told of a fruitlesi searcli lor a "iand of contentment." He said tbe latter chapters of bis life story would read like wild fiction.
It was early when tbe stranger awoke to make his toilet. Before sev¬ en o'clock he had taken leave of Offi¬ cer Saiuan and was on his way, look¬ ing as dapper as a summer guest.
"I travel without expense," he said "During the day I am able to get food in exchange for conversation and ?.!- vice. At night I fiave but little trou ble. I have slept in several jails froi; choice, but have been welcomed in homes as well. I shall rach my dc.'--- tinatioa without having spent a sina;lo penny for aixything. In fact I stailt>d on my trip without funds."
