QlJUl to Correct We ragret a typographical error in tbe first line of the second paragraph from tbe bottom of column 2 on page 4 of tbe last issue. It shonld read: "That the criticism of ChriaUan Sci¬ ence" etc. The words, "the crlti- clBiia," were left out.
A MARE'S NEST Mare's nest—an absurd or ridicu¬ lous imagined discovery; somethiug of apparent importance which a per- BOn fancies he has discovered, but which turns out to be a delusion or a hoajL.—The Ceniui-y Dictionary.
The coal heaver without a job, tlie conductor without a car, the hack- driver without a horse, even a domi¬ nie without a charge, all find time banging heavily on their hands, and what to do with it is sometimes puz- zllnK. In such circumstances some men take to .'heir beds, othera to drink, others still to a consideration of the affairs either of their neigh¬ bors or of the obstruse problems of village government.
To this last class, .apparently, be¬ longs our esteemed townsman. Domi¬ nie Dwight A. Jordan, who has taken with accustomed zest to the study of kilowatts, kilowatt hours, heat units, coal, oil and trolley cars. Tbe result ot all this is a published letter de¬ claring that the Trolley Company, of which Roland Lamb, Freeport's Vil¬ lage Pr|isident, is the president, is getting Its juice from the village power plant at a figure out of all pro¬ portion to the cost of Us manufac¬ ture. Ergo, there Is a hideous mys¬ tery about il which requires investi¬ gation and serious financial wrongs which demand to be righted.
"After some Investigation, I am convinced," saya the good man, "that this power plant cannot furnish pow¬ er to jnyore without loss at a rate lower than two and a half cents per kilowatt." Accordingly the Trolley Company for its 30,000 kilowatts of Juice per month should have paid the village $700 monthly Instead of a paltry $150 or $250, according to the season, more for summer than for winter months. Tho village, therefore, is a loser to the tune of $9,000 since tlie contract was made wMth the company, so figures the dominie.
The L'ith»3ns of Freepoit remember that one of their numiier possc^^.-ed ot the etlucat ional buK recently ploughed into tho field of adinoids with result;; that aro kIIII ilist.-cssing,, for on (ill po.=-sibIe occasions he isjP, Q. BjilJin? now invited by the commuters to ex¬ amine their tonKillur regions for those hidden ills of Iho fle.-^h. And these invitallons, bo it observed, how¬ ever seriously extended are > really Jocular, indicating a belief that thej

ing." May not a similarly lamenta-j ble ignorance exist in the casu of ai dominie who has burned the midnight i oil 'i tho nnrfnilt or the kilown't. its! origin, habits, habitat and activities?! May It not well be that both gentle-1 n.t.. uitiiiii well but that neither of[ them is really in the position to \ knowT I
Even the dominie isn't cocksure of bis ground, for be cloKea his publish¬ ed letter with "If these things are not.BO, there are many reputable citl- sens who will, with the writer, be glad to know it."
Thereupon, tbe Village President promptly accepts the challenge and takes the public completely into his confidence concerning his company's relations, troubles and losses since it began to buy village juice, and in¬ cidentally concerning a lying village meter (all meters are said to lie) which ran so spasmodically that the consumer was left in doubt whether he was buying Juice by the kilowatt, the bushel, the pound or the yard. He points out that a committee of vil¬ lage trustees investigated the entire subject and reported that a fiat rate ot $150 to (250 per month would be better than the loss of so good a cus¬ tomer as the Trolley Company, par¬ ticularly as the engineer admitted that "to carry the added street lights, and increased commercl&l business, Including the Trolley Company, not over one tou more coal was being used" than had been used the year before. Hence the flat rate now paid by the Trolley Company.
To the average citizen who knows nQ more about kilowatt than, say, a certain domlnte, this letter of Mr. Lamb's reads like very sensible dope, as the vernacular hath It. To The Nassau Post, It seems as if a maie's nest had been discovered by Dominie Jordan. Doc Cook, who didn't find the North Pole, hasn't anything on the Dominie as a discoverer.
soldier. Prizes were also won by MIm Catherine i^eoUner and Miss Ano^ Lemmer (Autumn Otrt) of Mas- peth, L. I., Mrs. Ralph Burnett (Pa¬ per Olrl), Miss Orace Brown (China- mlin). Mr. Peter Beck, dressed as Oeorge Washington, won second gen¬ tlemen's prize, and Ur. Martin Back, of liushwick Junction (a Dude), Mr. Wiiliam Hesse (Fanner), Mr. Harry ivmith (Clown), of Rooserelt, won va rious prises.

The Ma.sque Ball and Carnival giv¬ en by Roosevelt Hose Company No. 1, on Saturday evening, February 20, wag a huge succors, socially as well as financially. "The Fire Hall was overflowing with the merrymakers, there being about 500 present. Danc¬ ing was the event of the evening until midnight, when the grand march was begun, and prizes awarded. After the distribution of the prizes, dancing was resumed and continued until the wee sma' hours.
The efforts of the masqueraders were rewarded as follows: Miss Mc- Catfery, dressed as Daughter of Lib¬ erty, received flrst ladles' prize, a sliver handle umbrella; second la¬ dles' prlzBi was won by Miss Dorothy Dixon, dressed as a harum girl, and was a vanity case. Peter Beck, dressed as an Indian Chief, received flrst gentleman's prize, an umbrella. Various other prizes were also given.
