PAYING RATION FOR FAHENING CATTLE
Exepriments conducted at tbe Texas station; prove the value of cottonseed meal and silage as rations for fatten¬ ing cattle, says tbe Country Gentleman. The rations used were cottonseed meal and silage; cottonseed meal, cotton¬ seed bnlls and silage; cottonseed meal and cottonseed bulls; cotton seed and silage. Tbe cost of tbe feeds used wan as follows: Cottonseed meal $27 a tou. cottonseed hulls $7 a ton, cotton seed $17 a ton and silage $2.50 a tun.
Twenty-eight steers were divided into four lots, nnd all received the same treatment except for the rations. The average weight of tbe steers was 853 pounds, and they cost $42.24 a head, or $4.95 a hundredweight.
When on full feed eacb steer in lot 1, ou cottonseed meal and cottonseed bulls, ate six pounds of rocul and tliir ty ixninds of liulls a day. Each steer in lot 2, on cottonseed meal aud siljige, ate six pounds of meal and Ofty-twn I>oundH of silage a day. Kach steer in lot 3, on cottonseed menl, hulls .-ind silage, ate sl.\' pounds of meal, fiftCM'ii

pounds of hulls aud forty-two pounds , of silage a day. ICaclf steer in lot 4, ou cotton seed and silage, ate eljiht and niiH'-teiitlis pounds of cotton seed uud forty-eight [lounds of sllajre. Becatise the cotton seod scoured llie cattU- at tbe last of the feeding period It wa.s re¬ placed with meal as in the other lots and immediately the cattle recovered and increased in weight.
It will he noted tbat all the steers made excellent gains aud at a very low cost per 100 jiOHuds of gain. Tliu rela¬ tive gain of Die different lots, however, is hardly shown, for in shipping lots 1 and 3 showed much greater sliriiili age. The net shrinkage, or the shrinkage less the fill, on lot 1 was 124 pounds, on lot 2 sixty pounds, on lot 3 ninety- four pounds aud on lot 4 sixty nine pounds. Hence the actual gain of the silage and meal fed steers of lot 2 was greater than that of the hulls ami meal fed steers of lot 1, and lot 2 made a much larger profit
The net piofit on lot 1, fed hulls and meal, was ?14..'?2; on lot 2. fed silage and meal, $20,01; on lot 3, fed silagj-, bulls aud meal, $15.84; on lot 4, fed .si¬ lage aud cotton seed. $18.70.
Comparing the results of the four lots from the standpoint either of largest net gains or cheapest gains, lot 2. fed cottonseed meal and silage, must be given the advantage.
We must conclude therefore tbat the ration of meal and silage la consider¬ ably superior to tbe others.
