CHEAPER LIGHT Active, p«rsUt«nt compe UUon l>e- • tween concerns >upplylnir a similar product for sale in a common market Invariably rsults in tlie eatablshment of tbe price at wbicb tbe concern of¬ fering the sratest conceaaionla ia will¬ ing to sell its product as tbe price at which all will selL This trade axiom Is proven by tbe result following the^ efforts of the Naaaaa Light and Pow¬ er Company and the Glen Cove Light and Power Company to compete for business In the village of Bea Clitr. The Public Service Commiaslon has ordered a reduction of three cents a kilowatt hour In the price charged by tbe Nassau Company.
The decision was baaed on two cad¬ es before the commiasion. One the application ot the Olen Cove Light and Power Company for the approval of a franchiae granted It by the village of Sea Cliff. The other covers the complaint of realdenta of Sea Cliff as to the rates of the Nassau Light and Power Company.
By the terms of the commission's order the Nassau company will here¬ after supply current to numerous es¬ tates and hamlets, lighUng districts and villages in Roslyn Mineala, Port Washington, Oreat Neck, Thomaatou, Hyde Park, Westbury, Manhasset, East Wiliiston, Garden City, Hemp¬ stead, Baldwin, Floral Park, Sea Cliff Locust Valley, Oyster Bay, Bayville, Central Park, East Norwich and Hicksville at a maximum of 12 cents a kilowatt hour inatead of 15 eenta as Is now charged.
In the case as it came l>efore the eommlssion the' Glen Cove company proposed to supply Cea Cliff with cur¬ rent at 9 cents, the same rate It charg¬ es in Olen Cove, while the Nassau company was already furnishing cur¬ rent in Sea Cliff at 15 cents. It ap- , peared, however, to the saUsfaction of Commissioner Decker that there was ho certainty that the Olen Cove company could continue to deliver current at 9 cents in Sea Cliff and through other possible extensiona of Its territory with profit to itself. The company derived its current from the surplus developed in the plant of the Ladew Manufacturing Company in Olen ove and is able to thus furnish current at 9 cents through a limited distribution system in '.hat village. The Ladew company and the Glen Cove company are t>oth controlled by the H. R. Ladew estate, there is no contract exisUng l>etween the two, no guarantee that tbe manufacturing company will not Increase the cost of corrent to the lighting company and every reason to t>elieve that the ligbt- Inc oompany could not conUnue to furnish current at 9 cents through a more extended distributing system, necessltaUng the construcUon of a pri¬ mary generaUng plant of its own,
Under the stipulation by the Nas¬ sau company that if the approval of tb« Olen Cove company's Sea Cliff franchise were withheld it would make its general maximum rate 12 cents, the commission has so made ita ordsr.

Hauser's Red Bug
State Treasurer Hauser, who as a relaxation from official duties raises pear trees, recenUy discovered a blighted branch on one of the Bartleit trees. The blight was due to the pres¬ ence of a red bug with a head like an ant, bind legs like a grasshopper and an appeUte like a chorus girl.
In the interest of science and the crops of Bartlett pears, Mr. Hauser removed the blighted branch and sent it to Long laland farm at Medford, where the eminent bugologlst. Hall B. Fullerton, spotted the red bug and placed it under arrest and a micro¬ scope.
Experiments show tbat the red bug does not enjoy either pipe or cigar¬ ette smoke and has no use for cigars or snuff.
Mr. Hauser by his watchfulness has contributed to the welfare of the peo¬ ple of Long Island. Every red bug discovered and praced bors dn com¬ bat means something.
THE ARMY WORM Tbe army worm Is on Long Island. Permitted to exercise it own will, the army worm will eat pracUcally every bit of vegetaUon in sight To extin gulsb the army worm it must be fought.
Dr. E. B. Sputhwiok assures the Nas¬ aau Post ttiat Instead of lead bullets etomologists turn tbe deadly arsenate of lead on army worms with terrible results. Tbis is the way it is com¬ pounded and used:
"For a large lawn, dissolve ten pounds of arsenate of lead in 100 gal¬ lons of water. Spray the grass and gardens with this, using an ordinary watering pot. One pound of arsenate of lead dissolved in ten gallons of water will suffice for a small lawn."

In an effort to make a real sacrifioe in tbe interest of the suffrage cause, one woman has given up her regular visits to the manicure's and is caring for her own finger nails. Another is riding in street cars Instead of taxis. The determination to serve tbe cause indeed makes martyrs of women.
The Boy Scouts of Baldwin are in need of funds. In tbe good work done by the scouts none the less than in cue hetdth which comes witb tbe work the Scouts are deserving. aBldwin could do no t>etter than to chip in to support this clean American movement.
To correct a mistaken impression, it may t>e said that Roland B. Lamb, whateyer his distinction as a motor- man, is also efficient on the back end ot a car. He may even be said to be a live wire and of course be la never "off his troUey."
