MONEY, NOT MUSIC, STUDENTS WANTED
Criticise Freeport Supt. and
Principal for Buying Victrola
when Bills Were Not Paid
FUNDS FROM SPEAKING CONTEST
Meeting of Ais'n Tuesday Brought
Out Considerable Discussion
Among Ejfecutive Members
The expenditure of surplus money derived from the speaking contest of the Freeport High School last year for a Vlctrola, instead of turning It over to the students' association, has aroused consklerable feeling among the members.
The executive comittee of the asso¬ ciation discussed the matter at a meeting held Tuesday afternoon and the action of Superintendent Moon and Principal Arthur In not granting a petition of the association for the money received some criticism.
The sp( aklng contest is not recog¬ nized by ihe constitution of the stu¬ dents' association, but the students believe it should come under their Jurisdiction, Inasmuch as the associa¬ tion was formed to have charge ol alT recognized activities,
A number of bills were outstanding against the association when the pe¬ tition was presented to the heads of the school for the money.
Superintendent Moon and Principal Arthur held that as the contest was not mentioned in the constitution and the money should liave been retained by the faculty and be used as seemed advisable.
The students appreciate the Victro¬ la, but want to get their debts settled and with a hope of eftecling a coia- promlse, invited Principal Arthur to Tuesday's meeting. He Informed the Executive Commillee that the old ¦leaking contest had been disorgan- izeu and a new one formed. The new organization is to be controlled by the Principal and oue student from each school represented. This will give the students a representation in the new organization and place tbem in position to ask for the money made (rom this year's speaking contest.

He cast no reflection upon the officials of the couniy but stated that men should be chosen for oHlce for the fllne..s8 and not because of lheir popu¬ larity or political power.
The meeting was well attended and the ex-Comptroller was cordially re¬ ceived. The talk related to finances of the couniy and State, both subjects with which Mr. Lyon Is familiar.
