bwrinefis men declare that is one rea¬ son why the village has taken on a sleepy period. Others assert that the cause for business lairity is the need of industries and slo'wness of the mer¬ chants in not gettinjr together for the ! purpose of taking steps to brinjr some , into the place. ]
BALDWIN
.After a protracted illness. Captain Henry "Hank" Carman died Tuesday night at his home in Central avenue, aged 78 years. He was a life-long resident of this village and had fol¬ lowed the bay for many years. His wife died sonie years ago. A number of children survive him. P^meral ser¬ vices will he held on Saturday in the M. P. Church.
Slow business conditions a.re report¬ ed by some of the merchants. In fact, they state that Baldwin needs some kind of a commercial awakening. Like numerous other villages On Long Isl¬ and, it is largely residential, a crowd of men folks commuting daily to the city where they have business of their own or are under employment. The women folks are left at home in the main to run the town, as it may well bp said. The commuters get a couple of meals or less a day at home, and unless "detained at the office," get home regularly at night to occupy their beds. They, as a rule, have very little time to think or care about the advancement of Baldwin's business interests, or others, it is claimed. Some
While the county authorities sre making proflrress in resurfacing a por¬ tion of Orand avenue with Warrenifce, the question of » sidewalk at its in- trrscrtinn with the Merrick road at the northwest corner and of straight¬ ening both thirough/ares is reported to have h?en given serious considera¬ tion, hut no definite plans made. To the south of the Merrick road. Grand avenue takes a curve to the south- ^W'est around the Southard property. To the west of the old Baldwin .ho¬ tel, now owned by Hebenstreit, the Merrick road takes a dip southeast¬ erly as it comes to Grand. It is pre¬ sumed that these two swings were formed years ago by vehicles in ap¬ proaching the intersections and thjy have never been changed. There are actually five points at the intersec¬ tion, the Christian Hook road, or what is sometintes called the I>ong Beach road, coming in near the Mer¬ rick road, where Grand avenue inter¬ sects it from the, south. There is no sidewalk on the north side of the Mor- rtick road eaat of thp property occu¬ pied bv William Prior, which is im- mediarely west of the hotel at the northwest corner of Grand avenue. Years ago the old hotel had the plot running to the street .line laid out as a green. This was taken up when the present structure came into existence. The development weat of Grand ave¬ nue on the Merrick road and the re¬ cent erection of St. Christopher's Catholic Church creates a great neces¬ sity for a sidewalk, it is claimed. Foot travelers to and from the church find it necessary to take to the road after on the north or south aide of the Mer- on the north o rsouth side of the Mer¬ rick road. The Glover estate, it is re¬ ported, is willing to ?ive up land to Straighten the Merrick road and the
Southard estate land to straifrhten Grand avenue.
The Silver Lake Pharmacy will give | 10 per cent, of its Saturdsy'^s receipts ' to the Red Cross fund.
.Toe Sherwood has fully recovered from his recent physical knock-out and is on the hunt daily for school children who fail to att?nd sessions or parent! who neglect-to send them. Without the active Joe. Baldwin would have a much lower percentagre in school attendance and "miss fire" on lots of other matters which ,Ioe has familiarized himself with for many years and about which he can give considerable good "dope."
