The Switchboard^s Job
IF there were no switchboards your telephone instru¬ ment would look something like this. For there would have to be wires running from your tele¬ phone to each of the other subscribers to whom you wished to talk.
With the switchboard one pair of wires will suffice to put you in touch with the whole nation.
The switchboard is at once the terminal of your talk tracks and the switching station that sends your speech on its way.
Through the watchlike mechanism of the Bell tele¬ phone switchboards, the whole country is covered with an interlocking system in which there are eight million telephones.
