COLLECTOR KEITH
The nomination of Harry P KelUi for eollector ot inttmal rsvenue for the diatrict ot Long Island and Staten Itland U now before the Senate. Hi* conArmatlon is not likely to be delay¬ ed, altbougta It Ih aald that Senator O'Ooraan was not consulted with re¬ spect to the nomination. If O'Uorman bad bad tbe naming of the collector Keltb would probably have been tbe last man to be thought of. Tbey be¬ long to difTerent camps.
The selection of Keltb may be cred¬ ited in no small measure to Repieseu- tative Brown's influence and to tho fact that Keith himself, lu bis politi¬ cal acUvities, has sought to further the Interests of the opponents of Tam¬ many within the party.
Taking him by and large, Harry l\ Keith is a considerable politician. He }ias not been afraid to take a fliui stand as against the advance brigade ot tbe army of Invasion which for sev¬ eral years now bas sought to set up the Tammany standard on tbe Hemi<- stead Plains. In the Democratic State Committee, he has been a most anno>- ing tborn to the Murphy flesh.
Those wbo like Keith, like him im- menselyj those who hate blm, ba'o him cordially. There are men who say be ia the most efficient and agile aide stepper from Matinicock to Rock¬ away, and there are othera who are prepared to go to the mat to prove that he ia as atraight as tbe shortest and most direct line between two points as, say, between Kramer's i i Mineola and tbe court house, all uf wbich proves that he is a heap sight more than a negative quanUty.
Keith will make a competent col¬ lector. Following tbe rule which bai obtained since the halcyon days of the lamented Jackson, be will take care of his friends.
Tbe Post wishes the new collector vhe best of luck in tUs important Fed- ei'al office. It ia sure tbat he will uot take and counterfeit money over the counter.

Master of human desllnies am I! Fame, love and fortune on niy footsteps wait. I ' CiUes and flelds I walk. I penetrate
Deserts and seas remote, and passing by Hovel and marl and palace, soon or late
1 knock, unbidden, once at every gate. If sleeping, wake; If feasting, rise before
I turn away. It is the hour of fatp.
And tbey who follow nie reach every staH'
Mortals desire, and conquer every foe
Save Death; but those who doubt or hesitate
Condemned to failure, penury and moe.J
Seek me in vain and uselessly Implore.
I answer not, and 1 return no more.
Senator John J. Ingalls wrote thla stirring little poem. It did not appear in the Conflroaalonal Record iuiKuns; his speeche.s. ll did not need ll to gam i»morlality. And these fourteen lines will live and be remembered long after every speech its author ever di-iivered lu the Senate cliainhr i.i lost and for¬ gotten, I predict.
This must ever be one of the certain leHlB of good literature, its lastin;; quality. As to the future outlook for poetry a recent number of the "l.iteraiy Digest" says, "For the flrst thue since tlie heyday ot Tennynon'H iu)|iiihii ity books ot poetry have broken into the 'beHl seller tlass.'" And this .stale ment is made by as good a judge of public taste as Mr. (Jeorge l\ Brett, pres Idenl of the Macmlllan publishing house, who declares, "The poel willi a real gift has golden opportunities awaltiug hiin, and tlie largest possible audi ence in the blHlory of the world." And be goes on to say that the f let iou lov ing class may chan*t».aud that the moving picture shows are eiiipi>iug lh<. Beats of the regular theatres, but "ihls does not apply to poetry. Vou cannol Bel poetry Inlo moving picture shows."
Mr. Alfred Noyes, the young English poet, a man who is actually Pald money for his poems, has recently been appointed lo a "visiting piofesHorsliip' In English literature at Princeton lo deliver lectures on poetry. And Mr Noyes says "Poetry is steadily gaining in popularity. Recently 1 met a man wbo is tremendously interested iu verse. He is a niar.ufaclurer and lant year, when he was in England he made a special trip to the home of a givai critic, merely lo talk to bim about poetry. And the critic said to him, "You are the third American manufacturer who has come lo laik poetry to me thi.s week and I don't see the connection.'" Well, this department i.s trying lo get this very connection and will keep ringing ior a while lo see If il hits' your poetic bell. If it does, please answer.
Some time ago the editor of this paper made an urgent ajipeal to readei-.s to send bim old songs and poems of Long Island. Judging froiii the ,lack ol response there seeius lo be none. But in any body of iand that has been tin,' home of Indians, Dutch, English, Quakers,, Puritans prie.st.s and pirates, tlier.- must have been songs and poetic legends. Haven't you something of Om- kind tucked away somewhere? If so, kindly dig il out and send it lo tln' Post. The original will be reiurned lo you if desired. Alao send us ili.- very best poem you know.

Contentment In life ia really the main thing. Money doea not bring It for It la very well known that some of onr wealthy men and women get so Uttle of real enjoyment that they are depressed and mlaersblo the (reater part of tho time.

DESERVING QUEENS
Borough President Connolly should hold steadfast in his Ught to secure- needed improvements tor nis borough, and he slKuuid have the united sup¬ port of the citizens.
Long Island has ceased to be a foot¬ ball lo be kicked aboul as unworthy of attention. Queens flgures seriouH- ly nowadays. It haw taken new life. It is growing in population and ma¬ terial wealth. It i.s rapidly becoming municipal in its characteristics and may no longer be treated lo a lick and a promise.
Nassau County can well afford lo stand with Queens in upholding Long Island. Everything done for the sls- ler county is bound lo be of beneiil here.
By the end of the week the world of skippers and tbe rest of us will know which of the three yachts has qualified as defender of the cup. May the choice fall to the crift with the heels and may she prove Iriunipbant in the internaUonal contest.

It is a fact that the farmers collov-

One other item falls into plac;e a-
adding further proof that an era ol
national prosperity is beginning. Tlie

gahi of more than 150,000 for 1914 ovi i

ASK STATE TO BUILD ROAD TO LONG BEACH
Sea Side Village Stimulated to Action by Numerous Ac¬ cidents on Present Highway
TO SEEK $400,000 APPROPRIATION
Proposed Boulevard Would Con¬ nect Ocean Side and Beach Avoiding Railroad Crossings
The famous Long Beach Road, ori glnally constructed by inmates of tht- Hempstead town almshouse located al Barnum Island and one of the mosl traveled highways in Nassau County during the suminer season, will be im¬ proved by Ihe State if tbe plans of the lioard of Trustees of Long Ifeach are iinally cai ried into effect The numerous automobile accidents of the past year have stimulated the olH- dals of the .seaside village lo actioi; and they are preparing to ask nn apiiropiialion of JIOO.OOO froiu the next Legislature lo complete the work.
The road connects Rockville Cen¬ tre, (Jceanslde and Long B«'Hch. From Oceanside to the shofe | the road is nairow and in many places rough. The conleiiiplitted work iniludes the con¬ struction of a complete new highway across the mea<lows with a cBiicrete bridge at Wreck Lead.
The roadway is of uiii<iue and re¬ markable construction. Al the time ol it building squares of heavy clay cut from the surfaces of the meadov.-j and maishes were piled one ou toj) of the' other until the foundalion of the highway wss raised high above the tide mark. Over the surface gravel and loam wero spread and latr a road building material laid.
Since Long Beach sjtrang into poi) ularity as summer resort of the South Shore, tho lOMdway became u boiiie-
vard for motor-driven vehicles. Thou- sandn of them pass over il daily When tbe Idea of tbe new thorough¬ fare was brought before John J. Ger- hardl, president of Ihe village, he Im¬ mediately discussed -ihe matter with his colleagues In the Board of Trus¬ tees. During their discu-ssion It was agreed that sucb a highway would eliminate furiher a< cidents either on the road itself or at the railroad cross¬ ings. The plan is to make the new Ijoukevard of suBicient width so tiUit several machines can pass abreasi. .Ml railroiid crossings will be aVo'de'l
