Declares Nassau County Can't At- ford to Build for Consumptives
A strong protest against the erec¬ tion of a tuberculosis hospital In NaB- sau County was voiced today by form¬ er Controller John Lyon of Rockville Centre, at the hearing before the Board of Supervisors. The llassau I County Association, whose purpose It Rocka-1 !¦ to uplift the social and political' conditions of the connty has request¬ ed the Board of Supervisors to consent to a referendum for the expenditure of 175,000 for the construction of a tuberculosis hospital. «
Mr. Lyons when called upo said tbat he objected to this expenditure. He bas always advocated the limiting of expenditures. He said that conditions are getting pretty bad wnen doctors can come In and dictate to the voters wbat their expenditures sbould be.
"Thirty yeara ago," he said, "a doc¬ tor told me I bad tuberculosis, and if 1 had continued treatment with this doctor I would have been read long ago."
Mr. Lyon expressed Uttle faith in the State Board of Health, saying that it is established only to extract money from tbe people. Different speakers, he said, have asked the board to syb- mlt tbls proposition to the voters, some to the taxpayers and soma to tbe people.
"It is hard to tell Just what they do want," he added, sarcastically
