ER.SMITH SPONSOR FOR NEW HOSPITAL
Promulgates Plan by Which
Nassau and Suffolk Counties
May Work Together
TREATMENT FOR TUBERCULOSIS CASES
At Supervisors Monday Meeting— Mr Smith Will Suggest a Commi¬ ttee be Appointed
Supervisor Hiram R. Smith, gave out a plan a lew days ago by which a tuberculosis nospltai may be con¬ structed and maintained jointly by the counties of Nassau and Suffolk. The matter will be taken up at the meet- iig of the Supervisors at Mineola on Depteriiber 18.
At the meeting. Supervisor Smith will suggest that a committee be named to take up the plan of work¬ ing with Suffolk county in the mat¬ ter. If that plan falls then a move¬ ment will be started to have a tuber¬ culosis hospital in Nassau county.
Certain it Is that as a result of present conditions in the county which are emphasized by the recent Jlsclosure of eighty cases of tuber¬ culosis at Glen Cove, there will be an Institution for the care of the victims of the white plague In the county.
"I think that we of Nassau county should unite with the people of Suf¬ folk county," said Mr. Smith. "I un¬ derstand Suffolk county has purchased a site at Holtsvllle, but Nassau county could pay one-half of the cost and not only pay our share of the cost of construction, but an appropriation could be made for tbe up-keep of this institution.
"I have heard consldeiable talk of 1 county hospital for this disease, ¦.;t T¦.•^y not divide th,= ropt aid "n'tp ¦.'itL lilt- ycoyie ol fciaiioiii county on this proposition? The geographical 'onditlona are the same and the liv¬ ing conditions are similar and the tuberculoses patients of the two coun- ies would be cared for In the same julldlng. The additional cost of the latients frora two counties rather ;han one will be immaterial, and the initial cost om construction of the julldlng will be just cut in half. Perhaps the officials of Suffolk coun- y may not agree to this bl-county arrangement, but it seems to me that 10th counties will save a consider¬ able sum.
"As far as the management of the institution is concerned the offlcials could be appointed by a joint meet:'
ing of ttae snpervlsoni of Nassau and Suffolk counties, und I am sure that no superriaor of Nassau or Suffolk county would allow any political con- BideraUoa to influence hla apiwint- ment.
"In any event Nassau county will be compelled in the near future to make some dlsposiUon of those af¬ flicted with tuberculosis diseases. Un- forttmately thoes afflicted with this disease are indignet and the various town governments are called upon to provide for their support. In an in¬ stitution were estabelished, better treatment could be provided at a moderate expense and ttae health of other people in the community could be adequately safeguarded. To me, the segregation of those afflicted with the disease is a paramount import¬ ance.
"On September 18, the Health Com¬ mittee of the Nassau County Asso¬ ciation win have a meeting with the Board of Supervisors for the purpose of discussing the tuberculosis prob¬ lem in Nassau County. I under¬ stand that they recommended a ref¬ erendum to the people of the county on the establishment of a hospital. At that meeting I shall suggest the appointment of a committee with powers to effect some arrangement with the Suffolk county officials,,and in the event that It cannot be brought about, I think that we are justified In formulating plans for the construc¬ tion of a hospital in Nassau county."

by Dr. Frank Overtoh was not a big surprise to the residents of Nassau county, for the need of an institu¬ tion where these cases might be cai-ed for has been a matter of com¬ mon knowledge for some time. In the town of North Hempstead and Hempstead there is hardly a report made by the health oSlcialB in which the attention of the members of the town boards is not called to existing condition. There is no specific law under which the health oflScers may act, except as they are authorized by the town boards. It has been the cus¬ toms to authorize the town overseer of the poor to provide or the care of the tubercular patients. In the past the health officials have tried to place the patients in the Brooklyn and Long Island Institutions, but there are long waitlngflistB, with the result that the patients are allowed to remain in their own homes, and there is great danger of the spread of the dis¬ ease.
Some time ago representatives of the State Department of Health ap¬ peared before the Nassau supervis¬ ors and urged the rstablishment of a county tuberculosis hospital. Al¬ though strong roprfisentations were made, nothing das done In the mat¬ ter, despite the fact that a majority of the town and county offlcials be-

Here in ttae necessity of an inatlto- Uon of tills sort. Tbe only objection to the construction of a tuberculosis
; hospital is the expense, hut it was pointed out to ttae Board of Super¬ visors by a prominent resident that barring tbe initial cost of construc¬ tion, there will be a great saving In the care of the patients. The dis¬ ease is rapidly increasing, not only In Oyster Bay, but in the other towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead
: as well.and the health of residents can be safeguarded only by an im¬ mediate segregation of those afflicted
